BANGKOK, Jan 30 -- Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubumrung will travel to Malaysia's Langkawi early next month to meet former Malaysian premier Mahathir Mohamad to seek his advice on dealing with Thailand’s nine year insurgency in the far South.

Mr Chalerm said that he will visit Langkawi on Monday and Tuesday next week to meet Dr Mahathir and discuss cooperation between the two neighbouring countries to restore peace in Thailand's southern border provinces.

The deputy premier, who has been assigned by the government to bring an end to the southern violence, said Malaysian Home Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein will visit Thailand Feb 21 to discuss a plan to foster cooperation following his recent visit.

Mr Chalerm visited Malaysia January 8-10 and met with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and Mr Hishammuddin.

The deputy prime minister reiterated that the Thai government would not talk directly with the insurgent groups but the talks would be done through representatives until a mutual conclusion is initially agreed, then further talks could continue. (MCOT online news)

Lucky Chalerm..he gets all the good trips...there's some good pubs in Langkawi....he'll have a nice time there....the meeting should only last 1/2 hours or so...Mahathir would have had enough by then!

Great selections of duty-free booze insights with the good doctor to be had there.

I'm sure Mahathir will tell him that Malay Thais should be given privileges and concessions unable to other Thai citizens to make up for their poor education and lack of work ethic principally caused by their religion and its requirements. After all, that's what he did in Malaysia.

I must admit, it's hard to imagine someone with poorer education and work ethic than Thais, but apparently this is the case.

Of course Chalerm will reject the concept of positive discrimination for one section of the populace, unless they are rice farmers, or from the North/Isaan region.

Nice soundbite for a completely useless trip. Isn't the current Malaysian PM over the M-E buddying to Hamas at the mnoment? Now that sounds like a government that would be horrified at the murder and carnage in the South.

Yes, Mahathir is quoted as saying the visit by senior Malaysian politicians is a model for cooperation between the government and the opposition for Fatah & Hamas representatives; source http://www.mysinchew...ode/82458?tid=4

On a more serious note,

we never hear much in the way of detail about what is going to be discussed and what has been decided. The word "cooperation" is very woolly and tells us nothing.

In addition, the uninformed reader may jump to the following wrong conclusions:-

1) That Malaysia is ruled by Mahathir Mohammed (It isn't - he left office over 9 years ago and his influence has waned considerably)

2) That Malaysia in some ways controls the insurgents in the Deep South (It doesn't - in fact Malaysia and UMNO would see the insurgent groups in the Thai Deep South as a very clear threat to the stability of parts of Malaysia.)

3) That Chalerm as Minister of the Interior has control over Thai policy in the Deep South. (He doesn't - the Army and possibly the Council of State would have a greater say or veto over the way the area is policed and any major changes in the way it is governed.)

Just a meeting of the blind & deaf...that's all...nothing more.

OOOOOooopppps...I forgot to add the corrupt will also

attend the meeting.

Good luck with the mumbling: Salute! Skål! Prost! Cheers! ไชโย! Ваше здоровье! Santé! 乾杯! etc... here's to my ears!
