Nissan reaches 2-million-vehicle milestone

The Nation

SAMUT PRAKARN: -- Japanese auto-maker Nissan recently celebrated cumulative production of 2 million vehicles in Thailand at its plant in Samut Prakarn.

The new milestone was achieved in January.

"Thanks to the growing demand from satisfied customers, Nissan Motor Thailand has reached a new milestone," said NMT president Takayuki Kimura. "Business in Thailand has been growing at a steady yet astonishing pace - especially last year - making it the best year for the automotive industry. Nissan is one of the key brands contributing to this success. In reaching this milestone it truly shows the great results we have achieved.

"Making a further commitment to Thailand, Nissan announced last year that it's investing Bt11 billion more for our second plant on Bang Na Trad Road, Km 22, Samut Prakarn. It will initially produce 75,000 vehicles per year starting in August 2014, and this number will increase to 150,000 per year after full production is achieved," he said.

Nissan presently has a combined production capacity of 220,000 vehicles per year, he said. "But within a few years we plan to raise our capacity to 370,000 vehicles per year, thanks to the second plant."

Nissan has been producing vehicles since 1963 and presently offers seven key models. The auto-maker is the best-selling brand in the Thai eco-car segment with two models, the March and the Almera.

So which is it? 75,000 per year or 340,000 per year? Either way - if they have been here since 1963 and just now hit 2M vehicles, that equates to about 40,000 vehicles a year averaged out. So to invest 11Bn Baht more to me would be a non starter as far as ROI ins concerned, because it is not the numbers output p.a. it is called "demand".

Can you read? the new plant will produce 150,000 per year, and add that to their current production of 220,000 per year equals 370,000 in a few years.

Are you honestly saying that this multi-national company have not looked into things like ROI, demand/supply before announcing this?

isn't the cause of their succes the 1st car tax rebate scheme that hopefully is a one time offer... next year, they will see real sale numbers in stead of the quick fix face car rebate that will clog even more bangkok roads

Why do so many have to rain on a parade? Please read the aritcles before you start bashing on everything in Thailand. Positive posts are welcome on ThaiVisa also.

Just go back a few year, what cars did Nissan have For Sale ? nothing much in Thailand, other places had many more models + options, Saloon, Hatchback, Estates, Petrol, Diesel versions of most............

Now in the last couple of years Nissan Thailand has more car options, cars that look better, and a better price........... still wish they would push the boat out and come back with an estate version.. the last NV 5 door SGX Estate was a pretty good size, still loads about rarely see one for sale + getting on for 20 years old.
