Opening A Bank Account

Featured Replies

This is a question for a friend. She's here on a few month's tourist visa and without a lot of dollars. Is it possible for her to open a bank account? If so, which bank would you recommend as the place to face the least hassle? Thanks.

Hi, In most cases Kasikornbank will let a foreigner open an account. If a branch or bank will not oblige, go to the next/another one.

She will need her passport and a Thai address.

I will second that, Kasikorn is the easiest for us foreigners, I opened one with them a long time ago on Naklua road opposite soi 31 or 33. They will give a cash card (200/300bht) on the day and change the standard pin they give to you . Deposit some cash and your done.

I tried all banks last year and was unable to open up an account because I was foreign. It was something to do with money laundering and new laws.

FYI the Bank of Thailand changed the law regulating foreigners opening bank accounts here as of Jan1st. In theory now in order to open any type of bank account you need to be able to show a 1 year visa.

That's not to say that you still cant open a savings account but it will be at the discretion of the branch manager.

I prefer Bangkok Bank. Kasikorn hits me for 500b for renewal of atm card. Had a harder time updating information with them. BB web site is easier to use, and less expensive to transfer money from US using ACH through their NY branch.
