Maramook
There are the soldiers with scary weapons, battle helicopters and planes flying over Chiang Mai every day. What is taking place here, is it kind of a tiny war? There is even no information in the Internet. Edited February 23, 2013 by Maramook
elektrified
Do a search. Well documented. Actually I would be more interested in knowing why the RTP have such a heavy presence around town. Saw 3 police trucks each with 6 cops in the back wearing bullet proof vests marked "Mae Ping Police" and carrying assault rifles heading towards Chang Phueak last night. Heading out from town last night, the area around Arcade Bus Station was also crawling with cops also wearing bullet proof vests. Don't think I have ever sen the BIB carrying assault rifles before. Morden
Cobra Gold happens every year. Some drive trucks, others 'hard land' helicopters or fly fighter jets. The remainder hang around in town during the evening.

Hillside4Phil
there is a heap staying in the Airport Greenery where I stay and they have not worn the uniform at all and have been pretty quiet really and they have kept to themselves pretty much, was interesting to see them arrive on the first day and their bags had no airling tags on at all. The circling herc has been pretty impressive on the night sky and while waiting for my ride into the city a blackhawk came rushing into land at the airport and on the afternoon hazy skies was a photograph missed. Was funny though that the arrival of the American's also saw the Hare Krishna's parade down Loi Kroh road and that was funny Edited February 23, 2013 by Hillside4Phil

Popular Post BarnicaleBob
The Americans you have been talking about are U.S. Marines taking part in Cobra Gold which is an annual joint training mission that has taken place in Thailand for the past 32 years. During these missions the military forces involved get to practice working together as they train for a varity of things including natural disasters. During these missions the marines often take part in working with Thais in the building of schools and other worthy projects all around Thailand. This year as many as 10.000 troops are involed in this training mission which is taking part all over Thailand not just in Chiang Mai..

So, BarnacleBob E.Lee what you are saying is, at this moment Thailand is well defended against no-one but everywhere else is now defenceless in the war against terrorism (abbreviated T.W.A.T) Anyway on a positve note, its Gods way of teaching geography to the Brits and the Yanks.
