BANGKOK: -- Sweden and Thailand are now expanding police cooperation significantly. The focus is on human trafficking and child sex. One purpose of the agreement is solve more cases in Thailand but also to be able to increase the number of investigations of Swedes in Sweden who have committed crimes in Thailand.

“This agreement will be signed in Stockholm on 4 March when Thai Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra, will visit Sweden. The agreement will facilitate the exchange of information between the two countries,” says Justice Minister, Beatrice Ask.

She is currently in Thailand to meet with organizations and agencies involved in combating transnational crime.

After Thailand, she will to Vietnam to negotiate a similar agreement. Vietnam is an emerging destination for child sex tourism.

“Thailand’s a popular tourist destination for Swedes and with that many visitors there will be a higher rate of crime,” the Minister says.

I would venture to suggest that the Thais will get more co-operation from the Swedes than the other way round. If a Swede is sought by his own government he might be able to negotiate a " can't be located " response with the BIB but woe betide anyone who is short of the readies

"... “Thailand’s a popular tourist destination for Swedes and with that many visitors there will be a higher rate of crime,” the Minister says..." Just opening his mouth to change feet! Pity the journo does not know how to punctuate a sentence.

What Swedes have committed crimes in Thailand and managed to get back to Sweden?

There was something recently about a Swede on a serious charge who was allowed out for Christmas and that was that. There was a suggestion that a relative flew in and " spoke " to the BIB. Maybe another member will fill in the blanks

So the Thais let him go. And......

There I was thinking the Swedes were looking to the Thais for some ideas on how to enhance their salaries, always best to deal with experts.

Maybe the Swedish police want to ensure that Thais who are responsible for the deaths of four of their citizens because of appalling driving and who then flee the scene don't get away with it.

I wonder if that co-operation will get anywhere near the migrant blueberry pickers fate: with Thai gov't approved recruiting agencies (50,000 for 1 person, visa + flight is a bargain; double that and you're closer to reality territory), loans from gov't owned BAAC bank at 5%/month interest to cover the agency fee, and lower than promised income from hard work, making it impossible to re-pay the fast-growing (due to 60% interest p.a.) debt, ever. The result is hard-working people getting ever deeper into debt, eventually losing their land and what's left of an income altogether.

But all of that is of course overshadowed by the current favorite word of the day: "human trafficking". I can smell the cargo trains full of bound and gagged slaves rolling towards their various European destinations from here. Get real, guys...

Wow! Surely a ground-breaking announcement to end all crime and ensure a nicer, safer place to bring your family.

Don't do anything before we get back to you with an answer. We are going to get you names, address's, dates of crimes, where the criminals currently are, how they left the country, or just believe that this issue is enough that Sweden and Thailand have decided to address the problem.

Do you need an effort like this to talk to the Swedish embassy? Please, could we have mr. ********son back, he committed a crime, but he got away?

This isn't Swedens problem, but the Royal Thai Polices incompetence and corruption. Any recent news reports of dozens of Swedes evading Thai justice?

See Sweden and Cambodia...Sweden paid something like 40 Million Euro and Cambodia sent the Piratebay guy to them. And when you look the Wikileaks guy than Sweden is doing the same....

Basically what happens is that a person commits a crime in a foreign country, and at some point in time they go back to their home country. The crime can be reported later by the victim or the perpetrator might get caught later in their home country. This article talks about abuse against children, and one way that those people have been caught later is by them posting photos online.

This not an uncommon topic in the news and both governments should be commended for trying harder to stop the physical abuse of children.
