Passport Expiration And Visa/re-Entry Questions

Featured Replies

My question relates to the following information and is a little in advance but wanted to get the info. now for planning purposes.

1. When I go in June,2013 to get one year extension on my Thai Retirement Visa my USA passport will be expiring in February 2014.

2. Will Thai Immigration give me the Visa extension until June 2014 or will there be a problem with my Passport expiring in February 2014?

3. Next problem if they do give me the Visa extension and I will be out of Thailand for few months in the Fall and will be returning to

Thailand in December 2013. Will I have any problem re-entering Thailand (will have multi-entry visa) since there will only be 2-3 months

left on my USA pasport. I know some countries require the passport be valid for at least six months but not sure about Thailand?

Any advice would be appreciated.

You are aware that many countries will not allow your travel with less than six month validity (and you do mention travel)? I would get the new passport for use when you obtain the new extension of stay and make one trip out of it.

1. You would obtain extension up to expiration date of passport but with presentation of new passport/transfer of stamps the full one year time would be added so nothing lost for extension time.

2. As above first to expiration and then till June.

3. A multi re-entry permit will only be valid for current stay - so will end when you submit new passport. But there is no issue returning prior to expiration of re-entry permit regardless of passport validity ending as it will not be longer than passport.

I do not know where You are but I live in Nong Khai and my passport was full so I got a new one in Vientiane, You need to make an appointment online, and also fill your forms out, and print them, and bring to to the embassy, best to get the exspanded version way bigger same cost, will take about 2 weeks before it arrives in vientiane. Very easy I was the only customer, but I did have to suffer through large pictures of obama and hillary on the wall, $110. Condi Rice for president not hillery

Some off topic nonsence has been removed

Get a new passport - first! Your passport is your only official international identification. When it expires, you will not have a current and valid ID. Your US, UK, AUS, etc., id will not help you (except at your embassy). At that point, the only place you can go, internationally, is home. All visas will expire when your passport expires and you will be in violation of the country's, any country's, immigration laws. In Thailand, you must have at least six months validity remaining on your passport. Also, you must obtain a re-entry permit before leaving the country.

In Thailand there is no six month validity required as we have posted. He can legally stay until expiration date of passport/permission to stay stamp.
