<p>2013-03-19 07:16:58 GMT+7 (ICT) </p><br /> <p>NEW DELHI, INDIA (BNO NEWS) -- Five people were arrested following the gang rape of a Swiss national in India last Friday, local officials said Sunday.<br /></p><br /><p>Deputy inspector general DK Arya told the Times of India that six people were involved in the attack, as five of them were arrested.<br /></p><br /><p>The incident occurred on Friday night when the 39-year-old Swiss woman was on a cycling tour with her companion near a forest in the country's Datia district in Madhya Pradesh. <br /></p><br /><p>According to police, the attackers spotted the tourists due to their light from their camp site. They approached them while they were sleeping, overpowered her companion, and went on to rape the woman. <br /></p><br /><p>Authorities questioned several locals in the following days, until information led to the arrested suspects, who then confessed of their crimes. Police also recovered the victims' laptop, mobile phones, and other items.<br /> .<br /> The Swiss couple had arrived in India on February 3 for a cycling tour across the country.<br /></p><br /><p>Violent sexual crimes are not uncommon in India, as protests in recent months have continued, demanding the country's officials to tighten their laws against sexual assaults. <br /></p><br /><p>Last December, a 23-year-old woman was gang-raped on a New Delhi bus and later lost her life at a hospital in Singapore.
