Solar Panels

Featured Replies

can anyone explain to me on how to figure out how many solar panels one would need for certain equipment?

I have a chiller (1220W/Hr) running for about 7 hours a day and one pump from 225W for 24 hours

so if I am looking for solar panels online they are rated as how many Watts so is this their production per hour?

so if 1 solar panels is rated 160W/35.6V is it correct for me to assume I would need 9 of those to have my setup running throughout the day?

1220+225=1445 / 160= 9.03 or do I see this completely wrong?

I think you'd do better with this over in the DIY forum. Lots of "techie" talk over there. So, let's move this topic there and see what happens, OK?

Topic Moved.

Your daily consumption is about 1220*7 (chiller) plus 225 * 24 (pump) = 13,940 Watt/Hours per day.

Feed that in to the calculations here http://www.leonics.com/support/article2_12j/articles2_12j_en.php to determine panel output, inverter size and battery size required to maintain your system.

I reckon you're looking at a 6,000 Watt solar array and 2000 AH of battery (24V with 2 days autonomy) all driving a 6000 Watt inverter (to start those motors).

Are you totally off-grid or looking to supplement your mains supply? If you have mains available you could go for a grid-connected system and save the cost (and maintenance) of those expensive batteries.

EDIT Something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6000w-stand-alone-solar-system-48V-150A-controller-24-2V-1000Ah-OPzV-battery-/221196080349?pt=AU_Solar&hash=item33805054dd although I note that they say it will produce 25 kWH per day (twice what my sums reckon).
