Only there is NO Thai who can speak Russian and the ones who think they can, in reality can not.

So they are having yet another crackdown!

Firstly I would like to say I totally agree with punishing people working minus the permit. I work here and have to jump through hoops sometimes to get the required documents.

I wonder how deep this will go though as there must be a lot of money being passed under the table by Russians all over Thailand. This is probably just a show for the locals, to keep 'Somchai' and his family happy. Obviously some Ruskies and other farangs are gonna get caught up in the cross though.

Also, would TAT really openly sanction persecution of the Russians, tourists or working Russians? They must pump billions of Baht into this slowing economy and I think the powers that be, would be very scared of the gravy train holidaying elsewhere.

people you all sound like u've been paid by Russians smile.png really there's too many of them there, they are trying to survive doing anythibg that brings money ( remember the couple of Russians who were offering to tourists make photo with their monkey ) its rediculous!!! Soon you will see beggars and street bums from CIS countries !!! Really, i hope this will help to clear up the space a bit. Thailand is a nice place no need to fill it with rubbish people.

I agree , too many rubish people in Thailand ....you included ....

thank you laurent, but no i am not included, did nobody teach you not to assume you know everything ???? i am not in Thailand, i am looking at this mess from a side. Since it has become the place for downshifters from all over the place is a mess. If you want to serve the russian tourists you can always do it legally, you cant be a guide, but you can be a translator, coordinator, manager, whoever. Have a proper paperwork done and be free from all this crackdown crap.

Probably the first, most Politically Correct Statement made:

"" Since it has become the place for downshifters from all over the place is a mess. If you want to serve the russian tourists you can always do it legally, you cant be a guide, but you can be a translator, coordinator, manager, whoever. Have a proper paperwork done and be free from all this crackdown crap.""

This goes for any Visitor to any Country... If you see a need to Work, Then follow the Rules!

Regardless were you are if you are following the "Book", No one can complain! You have paid your Dues, If the Locals don't like it? What is the Thai Word for Pumpkin...? Or should I say "Pumpkin Off!!" I have Played the Thai Rules, Played the Thai Game.. Now you need to be researching what you are accusing and who... before you do!

If you Follow the Rules, then the Last Laugh is on the One who is Pictured at the beginning of this Post... "In the Ugly Shirt"!

(Who has to "Save Face"... Now I think it will Back fire....)

Only advise... Follow the Rules, then let them Stew in the own Soup! No one will eat Thai Mafia Stew!

Lazycat and Ironmike you are right. The Russians are rude, arrogant, have no manners. Get them out. Employ everything possible. There are too many of them. Even on Koh Chang at Bang Bao Pier there was a russian operating a tour business. I couldn't believe it. I said to her 'Do you have a work permit?'

She said I am just an interpreter ! I said you are working illegally and taking Thai business, then her Russian boss came and I didn't want a punch-up so left.

This is good. It's never a good idea to have one ethnic group take over another country. Before the Russians, we had a mix from all over the world. It's getting like Little Russia here in Pattaya too. I want Thailand to remain Thai.

You want "Thailand to remain Thai" - wow, maybe we should all go home.

A Thai visa in a Russian passport is the same as the visa in your passport.

perhaps so.

But I want to walk down the streets and feel like I am in Thailand, not in Russia, based on all the signage....

Then the English signage needs to be removed, based on your logic... What makes it OK to have English signs and not Russian signs? Neither make Thailand look more Thai.

May I suggest that you refer to my post no 129

And if you are not yet aware of it, thai people are learning the common language (english) to communicate with the rest of the world. And so do I.

Refer to this sentence: Neither make Thailand look more Thai. And if you're not yet aware of it, Russian was a common (official) language in every USSR country and even more. All together they're not a small part of the world. Sure there're more English speaking nations but it's hardly a reason to say this language is ok and that isn't.

If you don't like it so much, may I suggest you take your whining with all of your unhappy buddies and move somewhere with no Russian signs?

Why should a Thai speak Russian?

If you want to travel the world, you better learn a language that is understood beyond the borders of your own country.

You're right, they shouldn't and so shouldn't Russians be expected to learn English if they're on a 2 weeks annual vacation, there's no need for it, there's no use for it anywhere else in Russia unless you're in some overseas business...

What Thais should do is hire Russians, issue Work Permits, etc, to take care of all those millions of Russian tourists.

It's already been said, not all Russians are the same - not all of them rude and cheap, the same could be said about every nationality, I could go on and on about Americans and French and Canadians and I've met some real English pricks. You can't judge a whole nation by a few examples. Besides people tend to notice bad things better than good things so open your eyes...

another Witches hunt ..... When Thais will speak Russian they will be able to complain , but Russians dont speak English so 2 choices , you forbid them to come to Thailand and you will see a lot of hotels and places closing down Or you accept the fact that there are people more qualify to take care about those tourists. How many Thais work illegally in foreign country ?

Here in the US, practically 80% of the Thai's here are working illegally. They are here on student visa's or monks visa's and are not supposed to be working. And do we as Americans give a shit? No.. Because we don't speak Thai and they do and most of the jobs they do here require you to speak Thai. coffee1.gif Plus the fact that the Thai owners that hire them, don't even pay them a minumum wage..

If they are caught the will be deported too

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck it's corruption.

I know Russians that are embarrassed by the Russians they saw in Thailand. Says it all.

I'm English, and I'm often embarrassed by the English people I meet in Thailand. They seem to think that the rules don't apply to them, that they're somehow above the herd. Reality bites hard, especially in places like Kanchanaburi, Pattaya, Ranong and Khon Kaen.

I say good on the Russians! They saw a gap in the market and are doing something about. Mr somchai complains boo hoo. Maybe if they provided a decent set of services in the first place they wouldn't find themselves in this problem.

Fingers crossed the Russians move into renting jet skis some time soon.

I find this topic extremely interesting...........Just as I do here in the United States...... Let me see... Or maybe it will way itself....... So what do I need in my bank account to get a retirement visa?????? And how about those tons of rice sitting in warehouses right now???? LOS you have changed so much, I miss the old ways, the old school of Thailand..... But it is gone, and gone for what? You do not have the resources or the means to enforce what you are doing..... Just l;ike so many other countries...... As my jeart gently weeps?????

This is just my opinion, but my heart gets a little saddened at times I admit....

Thank you all for your postings, and comments.......

So the government should scrap this Crackdown on Russians, and instead send all these unhappy Thai people somewhere where there are no Russian signs.

Just bring some more busses, we are going north.

Oh, but the crackdown is already headed north.

Oh well, thanks for the suggestiona anyway Nungstein.

but... but English beat them, there are 109 English against 99 Russians, shouldn't they start with English? tongue.png

i think the idea is to go after people that don't have work permits.

these seem like very low numbers for a place where i see a lot of farangs working

Would you be expected to learn Italian or Spanish if you were taking a few weeks vacation to those countries? Don't tell me those languages aren't world languages but English is, it's not a point, a point is, if you only gonna use it a few weeks per year, why bother learning it?
