Appeal court cuts confessed bomber's jail term
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A bomber convicted for a 2010 attack on the Bhum Jai Thai Party had his jail term slashed Tuesday from 35 years to five years.

The Appeals Court cited minimal damage as ground for leniency to reduce the sentencing.

The lower court ruled last April to find Anek Singkhuntod, 29, guilty of bombing the party headquarters.

In working with five accomplices who were tried separately, Anek concealed a homemade bomb in his fruit cart before pushing it passed the headquarters.

The blast caused damage to the party's back walls, some vehicles parked nearby as well as a leanto of a food vendor. Anek also sustained serious injuries that resulted in blindness.

Cabinet approves plans to buy NGV buses

BANGKOK, 9 April 2013 (NNT) - The cabinet on Tuesday has approved plans to acquire a fleet of over 3,000 NGV buses for the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA).

The Transport Ministry earlier submitted a 13 billion baht budget request to procure the NGV-run buses. The proposal, which had been submitted to the cabinet several times over the past year, had earlier been rejected due to lack of necessary information.

The ministry voiced its belief that the plan will help save operating costs of up to 260 billion baht per year. The BMTA’s current debt stands at 76 billion baht and the agency has reportedly been operating at a loss for over 20 years.

According to Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is in favor of the NGV bus project as the government aims to reduce the use of private cars. The government is also considering a joint ticketing system to facilitate passengers using bus, skytrain and MRT services in the future.
