Liverpool F.c.

Hope to see him in Red doing exactly what he does best as shown in the vid. We have lacked any threat in the air since sometime think we will have some interesting options and formations under Kenny!

marcotti was saying on the times podcast this week that the most successful striker in england in the last ten years or so is drogba, and liverpool now have their drogba. battering ram of a physical forward who can play and who just dominates defences. i can't wait to see him play.

Spot on Stevie... cant wait also! he really does look like a colossus in the box

So much room to improve and at 22 he has fantastic potential.

You still need something decent behind them....you needed to try and get some quality in midfield to help out Gerrard IMO.

Good luck today!

i've read moneyball recently and it is fascinating. if the theories which have worked at the red sox can be put into practice successfully in football it will be really interesting to watch.

The reason I havent personally read moneyball before is that baseball itself lends itself to statistical analysis so much of baseball statistical theory such as pythagorean expectation simply will not apply in soccer. However so I am not really interested in applying baseball concepts to soccer. However I am extremely familiar with JHenry's philosophy and I know that there are large areas to take advantage of because the underlying model has changed dramatically over the last 15 years.

You see statistics are simply statistics and unfortunately and you should really act like Commolli. Pretend that Suarez is really expensive when is obviously cheap. Complain that Torres is worth at least 70m and you were robbed. And reluctantly reduce your youth squad because you cant afford it rather than it is a waste of money and too much risk. But if Henry just wants to show off all that will happen is exactly what happened in baseball. Which is that every football team buy a calculator and employ a maths graduate for 30k a year.

I noticed in the Guardian article Henry says that there success in baseball was based on taking advantage of other peoples stupid decisions. The problem with that strategy is that if you assume that people are going to be stupid in order to succeed and you lose it logically implies you are a complete moron.

If we are going to sing, may I suggest

"Can you hear the drums Fernando"

there was something in the air last night, your debut was <deleted>, fernando.

i enjoyed the chorus of 'stayed with a big club, you should have stayed with a big club' though.

That signing of Hodgson is proving pretty useful eh chaps. Still, no doubt all the credit goes to Kenny.

Wonder what's going on over on the Chelsea thread? Imagine with their massive new signings and the importance of the game they just played, they'll be a frenzy of postings from their legion of Thai based support as they toss back and forth matters relating to the future of their club.

that signing of hodgson's who hodgson admitted publicly that he didn't know what position the player played in. so stuck him out on the right wing.

playing in his proper position under dalglish he's now scored four goals in five games. go figure.

Of course you did..:D

Cos if i wanted to buy a Book to know more about Gold & Sullivan, i'd buy a Book on Newcastle, yeah..

Moneyball has little or nothing to do with the Owners of the Boston Red Sox..

Sounds good though stevie, i'll give you that..

You all sound so articulate & smart you Liverpool Supporters nowadays, what with your " Stats " & " Commodoties " & all that, it's incresdibly impressive..:D

Bwah.

I'm glad to hear it Stevie.....because I done a wee bit of reading myself and I can't get my head around how sabermetrics and on base percentages will affect Liverpool's performance.

"Keep on trying lads!"

Care to elaborate?

Well done Liverpool.

Amazing how king kenny has them playing and their win against Chelsea was merited. Great organization and tactically astute, plus saw glimses of some of the great Liverpool teams from the past. What a difference after the clueless and useless Hodgson.

Also I guess the Chelsea manager was under pressure from his Chairman to play the 50 million pound man. More like 50 pence. The irony is that the presence of you know likely disrupted the team and contributed to the defeat.

Have to remember it was the Chelsea Chairman who single handedly got rid of who some say is perhaps the worlds best manager.

This is what happens when people with more money than sense are allowed to dictate or interfere in team matters etc.

Anyway: with these performances not long before Liverpool are top 4 at least!

Driven young man makes big, gets cocky, buys team, buys mega-paeng players, they do well for a couple of seasons, gets cocky, meddles, crash and burn. Nature's rythm is a wonderful thing.

Or, hire a Professor, win a few trophies early on, get tight, and then have a 5 year drought. (will Bham make it six?) ;)

Steve, have I gone well past the point of replying to Singh's posts where I appear to be actually foolish. Bill James is employed by the Red Sox and was Jhenry's almost first appointment. I think that moneyball was written at about the sametime that Henry acquired the Red Sox. So dont worry Singh is having a conversation with himself.

Statistical analysis when applied to foot ball will show some stuff that is fairly obvious through common sense when you can buy Suarez over the long term and Chelsea are buying Torres because he will help in this years CL obviously the transfer numbers are screwed. It will show some more surprising things like the youth program is a waste of space I guess.

But from Henry's perspective football is an easier game to win at because it is 'less' dependent on 'statistical' analysis rather than more. So what happened in baseball where there are. so many independent variables is that everyone caught up very quickly. Henry philosophy is based on taking advantage of subjective knowledge. If I could put this simply - as a simple theoretical case of pure logic if everyone in the world thought a stockmarket would go up it would be 100% guaranteed to go down. This is a simple rational statement of fact. If anyone cared to think about it for 5 minutes they would realize it was true by definition. So what this for instance tells you is that when you have a player who is considered the best in the world and the most valuable he is by definition a 'short' because his terminal value is zero in any case. And so much of that value is subjective. And when a club says that a player is not for sale at any price that is exactly the time when it is best to sell him.

All I am really saying is that fans place 'emotion' and 'group thought' above what they know is true common sense. Essentially Henry made his money out of commodities like soya beans and corn the fact people place value based on emotions and belief and loyalty etc in football is obviously a big plus and the fact he is trading against people looking for immediate results is a big plus. But the really big plus is his discipline in trading. Footballers are so expensive it is a totally ridiculous concept to leave buying and selling decisions up to the manager.

Jamie Carragher has been remanded in custody by Londons Metroplotiton Police pending a bail hearing. CCTV appears to show the Liverpool vice captain walking around with 50 million pounds worth of Roman Abramaviches property in his pocket for over an hour
