Hi parents! Im leaving Australia soon, bound for Thailand wit our 5 month old. Shes my first, and its our first time flying with a young baby. So I was after any tips those of you more experienced with this may have to offer please!

If it makes any difference, we are flying with Singapore air.

smile.png keep her occupied but at 5 months I would imagine she will sleep for most of it but for the times she isn't keep her engaged. Walk her around, look out of windows, play peekabo just don't ignore her when she cries, even if you aren't the kind of parents who pick up their kid when it cries, on a plane do it cause it can & does annoy others, so do whatever it takes to keep her happy.

Keep a bottle of water for take off & lanidng or a dummy as it helps regulate the pressure in their ears when they suck on something. Speak to staff on getting on plane to clear how you can get any formula made up & imo, keep her in a baby grow or pj's it is more comfortable for them than if in stiff clothes like skirt or jeans.

Buy some sachets of baby neurofen or calpol in case of earache, imo it is better to give it to them before take off rather than when/if it happens during the flight. Prevent rather than resolve is key with small kids on planes.

Thanks Boo. Nurofen and pj`s are great ideas! Ear aches on planes are terrible to have.

Hi, the pjs are definitely a good idea - make sure they are comfortable - I've found nothing with elastic around the waist is best. See if you can request a bassinet seat - not only do they give you the bassinet, but more floor room also. Singapore airlines are usually great. If you do request a bassinet, make sure you are there early to check in is all. Also, allow yourself time to do a final nappy change just before you board - we never use the parents boarding first thing, instead always boarding last :) If you are organised and have a few new things to pull out of a bag to play with usually helps (just don't choose anything with a rattle / music - it will drive others nuts!).

Just stay relaxed is the best thing I think - both our girls have been travelling since they were a couple of months old, and we have never had any trouble - they now love flying!

If you go with the nurofen, just make sure you have tried it out with bub before the flight - it's not worth trying something new in the middle of a flight!

Only other thing I can think of is a sling for the airports as it is too hard to have a stroller, and condense your carry-on stuff so you have as little to carry as possible.

Have fun - flying with kids can actually be great!

Telephone Singapore Airlines and ask what their requirements and charges are. Bassinets are at the bulk heads. Be aware that these seat in all aircraft I have been in have fixed arm rests. We recently flew BKK SYD return with a 6 months old and was not allowed to use a bassinet. We flew Thai. I was also charged 12000 baht for no seat. I know Qantas charge over 10000 baht

Could you or others expand on the comment about costs for bassinets?

I naively thought that they were offered for free or at a minimum cost.

Referring to those which go against the bulkhead or the back of the galley or kitchen, with the extra legroom.

When we flew several times with our baby on EVA air. The bassinet was complimentary. If an infant fare can be consider complimentary. AND, the flight staff were extremely polite and helpful. Bring toys and games and plenty of water for the lil tike. At 5 months old, in our case at least, sleep was the major activity for most of the flight.

We where charged a small amount for the bassinet Kris when we flew with our 6 month old about $50's 5 years ago with Etihad.

The baby slept most of the time and was content sucking on the dummy during take off and landing which is when sometimes they experience discomfort.

Have a good trip.

I'm sure with Singapore air they have a limited number of bassinets available for free, first in first served basis. Her ticket cost was 70 dollars return which paying through the travel agent was much cheaper than the online prices of both Jetabroad.com and Singapore airs website.

Very handy tips and ideas so far guys, keep em coming!

Bringing liquids on a plane is normally a no go when going through security. But the flight attendens will be happy to provide.

^^ once you are through security then you can carry liquids onto the plane, most food outlets will happily make up a bottle or fill water for you.

We were not charged for the bassinet as we did not qualify for one. I did not find this out ( about the bassinet) until we were on board the aircraft Our charge was for the infant. With Thai Airways you have to contact them after you book your fare to get the infant fare if you use their internet booking. They even charge 560 baht from Chiang Rai to Bangkok for an infant..

Parents ARE allowed to bring liquid formula and water for the baby. Not sure if any limit in amount but it's allowed.

Just spoke to Singapore air and they said enough liquids can be taken on the plane for an infant. A stroller can also be taken onboard, and does not affect any weight. She gets 10kg of checked in luggage, and carry on is allowed for nappies etc. Very fair people at Singapore air, once again their service is excellent. Didn't even have to wait on hold to speak to a real person!

that would be the issue. Sure Singapore air say it's ok but I'd assume it's airport security that could refuse it. Anyhow, onboard bottle water, baby cereal and mums boob is enough.

... and Tonic for the Parents ... but what about the Baby?

.

A megaphone!...:D. Its kind of making me nervous if she disturbs other passengers. I really understand what a screaming child is like on a plane. Still, arriving safely is the main issue isn't it.

Years ago they used to put a tot of brandy in the babies milk to make it sleep.

Outragious to the modern parent but it never did me any harm....................................... blink.pngw00t.gifw00t.gifsick.giflicklips.gifvampire.gif1zgarz5.giftongue.png
