Visa Help For 6 Months Or More In Se Asia

Featured Replies

Hello, at the end of july i want to fly to bankok and travel around all of south east asia, and im having trouble getting a clear idea on what visa i need and how long i can stay, especially for thailand. Because i dont know how long id like to stay in each country, i would like the maximum time visas that i can get, is 180 days for thailand? Do i apply for all my visas for laos, cambodia e.t.c before leaving, or do i apply once im there? Very confused about what to do especially as i am only booking a one way flight. If anyone could shed some clear light on this for me i would be very thankful!

You do not provide enough information. Where do you fly from and what is you nationality?

Oh sorry about that, im 24 from the uk and will be flying from london

You should at least get a tourist visa, single entry. As without a visa you need to have a ticket out of Thailand within 30 days. A tourist visa gives you 60 days in Thailand and can be extended by another 30 days.

Each time you fly into Thailand you get a permission to stay for 30 days and if you cross a land border you get 15 days to stay. So it depends on your travel plans if you need more than 1 tourist visa for Thailand.

You can get a tourist visa from the consulate in Hull, and can apply by mail half July. if you need more than 1 entry you can ask for a double or even triple entry.

You can also obtain a tourist visa for Thailand during your trips to other countries if you decide to stay longer in Thailand.

Several years ago I bounced around SE for about 2 years. I got my initial visa for Thailand, a 60 day 2 entry one. Worked great, but eventually I'd just do 30 days here, then fly somewhere for 2-4 weeks, then get a 30 day entry on arrival at the airport. With airfare here relatively cheap, it's easy to do this.

As for visas for your other countries, they are all easily available in Bangkok, or can be obtained at the border crossings or airport. As mentioned above, border crossings now only give you 15 days. So have to be careful with that. Extensions are possible, but they are a bit expensive.

What I'd recommend is to get a bit of a plan setup. Nothing specific, but start mapping out what you'd like to do and see. Put some general times to it and things will start getting organized. Of course, once you start traveling everything will change. But by then, you'll have a better idea of what's going on as you'll meet lots of other travelers who are doing the exact same thing. They'll help you through the process.

Don't get stuck in one place too long if you really want to travel around. I knew some who got to Khao San Road and didn't leave for many months. Which is OK, but limits your other travels.

We've got a pretty good travel forum here. Feel free to post questions there, or in the SE Asia forum for other countries.

Lao & Cambodia will give you a tourist visa at the Land Checkpoints (& a VOA at the airport) Malaysia will stamp you a 90 day pass at the border & Singapore 30 days no need for a visa to enter either Burma, I'm not sure about, you do need a Visa but I think you may need to go to their embassy 1st. When visiting Vietnam I have always got a visa from their embassy but they may also do a VOA for tourists now. The Philippines will give you a three week stamp at the airport. Never been to Indonesia so can't help there.

A note about the Thai consulate in Hull, the world and his wife use it, you may get a quicker response from one of the other consulates (The woman running the one in Cardiff was very helpful to my mother when she came out for an extended visit a few years back) if you live near South Ken the RTE London isn't far from the Tube.

Thankyou for your information so far, its very kind of you! so in theory i can get as many 30 day visas as i like if i make flights out and back to thailand? or is there a limit? And ive seen on a thai visa website that you can get a 180 day visa with 3 re-entrys (i assume that means leaving the border and coming back in after 60 days) Can anyone give me some information on any experience they may have had with that visa? A

Flying in and getting 30 days is a visa exempt entry, no limits. A triple entry Tourist Visa, would allow 3, 60 day entries, and each can be extended for 30 days for 1900 Baht each.

If you have a visa you can come in with a one-way ticket and do not need rpoof of onwward travel. Only when you plan to fly in without a visa for the 30 day visa exempt entry you need proof of onward travel within 30 days of arrival.

(Within Asia this is seldom enforced by airlines, but flying from Europe it is))

One correction to above posts is Laos and Cambodia do not give you visas at the border - you have to pay for any visa but it can be obtained at the entry point.

If you cross at Poipet for entry into Cambodia, be aware of the border scams. Best to get an evisa.
