does anyone do air laying? (its a way of propagating trees from established trees by cutting into the bark and encouraging new roots to grow in a medium)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Layering

i need sphagnum moss, for the process but haven't been able to find in any garden shops in phuket. i expect the plant shops in BKK on the outer ring road near Baan Bua Tong is the place to look but it will be months before i go up that way.

does anyone know if there is a thai equivalent? i know its done all the time here (Pak Chong for example) but don't know if they use imported sphagnum moss, or something more local

i guess my wife knew the answer already but i needed to check

coconut coir for air-layering

http://www.ausbonsai.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=8191

it seems the thai way is to use 'din neow' which is the sticky mud they use in pond plants to make a dam on the branch. then wrap the stripped section in coconut coir and wrap in plastic. i guess as an extra precaution, i would soak the coconut coir in boiling water to kill any bacteria first.

i have an olive i want to air layer to make some babies

another interesting link

We use compost coconut coir.

There are ready filled compost coconut coir in plastic bag for air layering
available at JJ Market, Bang Bua Tong or some plant shops.
It is convenient to work.

Cut the plastic bag half, cover to the the cutting on the bark and fasten with cable ties.

Just from my experience of doing air layering .... the time roots take to develop varies with different plants ....(some seem to take months! w00t.gif ) .... but one needs to make sure the fiber in side the plastic rap does not dry out... keep the area shaded too, use some shade cloth.... that helps you remember too, where they are.... if you try several plants dotted round the garden! thumbsup.gif
