We live in Thailand. GFs daughter is a 7 year old Thai citizen. She has a current US visa. She has traveled with me and her mom several times outside of Thailand including the US. I am a US citizen.

Since her mom will not be traveling with us this time, what papers will I need to get out of Thailand, into the US, and back?

Thanks for any help

Make sure you have the childs birth certificate with you. My son was refused exit through Chiang Mai airport because his mother didn't have his birth certificate with her. They said to the mother 'how do we know you are not taking him to Australia to sell him' many years later I still have not been able to understand how the production of his birth certificate proves you are not going to sell him. My then wife had to depart for Australia as her visa ran out the following day, almost immediately get on a plane back to Chiang Mai with said birth certificate and then everything was hunky dory except for my wallet which was considerably lighter. Incidentally the boy had both Thai and Australian passports.

That, does not sound like much fun. Exactly what I am trying to avoid. I appreciate your thoughts.

I’m assuming there is other documenation required to take a child out of Thailand, into the US and back, who does not share last name. Getting something from her mom is no problem, but is that sufficient. I am assuming there is something more formal???

Human trafficking is a big issue, for that reason you will be checked if you travel with a child that doesn't have your last name.

Have written permission from the mother to take the child out of the country with you, including a signed copy of her ID-card and her telephone number.

Just a simple note, identifying you and the child, stating the reason for the journey and giving you permission, with telephone number for any questions. Maybe a copy of birth certificate next to mothers ID-card.

Thank you paulchiangmai and Mario2008.

Signed copy of child’s birth certificate

Signed copy of mom’s ID-card

Permission note from mom which will ID me, child and reason for journey. Including mom’s cell #. Perhaps the note should be in Thai and English for the US end.

I am not too sure that I would take a signed copy of everything as apparently it is easy to forge copies, where posible I would take the originals.
