petedk
When I was studying at university I worked in a pub in England and always worked out the prices in my head. Sometimes people would by 20 drinks in a round and some time later order the same round. They were impressed that the figure I came to was the same as the first round. Imagine my surprise when I went to a small vegetable wholesale on Thong lor. The guy there just rambled off the prices .... in English and much faster than I could follow. He does the same in Japanese and Chinese and of course Thai. No need for a calculator for him.
ABCer
Hi, ducky. I didn't bother to look through all the posts, so if I am doubling an opinion, I apologise. I suggest it is a purely psychological thing. Not many Farangs speak Thai (like me), so instead of saying 60 (which I wouldn't understand) they show me the figure on their calc. Politeness? Another suggestion is - maybe they think us to be inferior and not knowing that 20x3=60? After all how smart can I be, not speaking Thai? Politeness? Or saving my face?
