Thai farmers to protest against drop in guaranteed price

How can these farmers complain? They've been paid far higher than market rates for a long time and will still be paid far more than market rates even at the new reduced level. What exactly do they think they are entitled to and how can posters here say they have been ripped off?

As for complaining about the 15K having been a guarantee, they are Thai and this is Thailand, don't they know the word guarantee means nothing in Thailand? As a "falang" that has Thai's try to overcharge me, lie and cheat me every single day and in the most trivial ways I actually find this kind of funny.

God,you must know some awfull people as a "falang",,i never get overcharged ,lied to or cheated by Thai people ,in fact i have only once ever been cheated in all my years here ,i cannot understand some of you who post on thaivisa ,you live in a different world to me and my family.

In the interests of accuracy, you should change "in fact" to "AFAIK, I have only once ever been cheated in all my years here"

Or maybe "unwillingly" would be a better word to insert...instead of "ever"

This isn't a I've been cheated less than you so i am more into Thai society than you thread.

This is about the cruel reality of yet another bunch of greedy capitalists dressed up as socialists breaking yet more promises.

The children's tablets the rice prices what next?

Just let the rice market do what it does and if the farmers are resilient enough they will find new uses for their land. The problem is socialism doesn't like the little man to think.

This is what the Thais need to think about when they go to the polls next time.

Why would they want to listen to a farang when that little pygmy knows what's best for them!!! At least he tells them he does.

Wouldn't you belief a convict on the run who has raped Thailand of their wealth (reputedly) not my words, mind you!!

Farmers rush to sell rice before new pledge price takes effect
By Digital Media

BANGKOK, June 21 - Farmers across Thailand are speeding up harvesting their rice to sell it to rice mills before the government's rice pledging price cut from Bt15,000 to Bt12,000 per tonne takes effect at the end of June.

Farmers are worried they might not make profits, for weather forecast predicts heavy rain in the next several days.

The cabinet acted to slash the rice subsidy from Bt15,000 to Bt12,000 per tonne, effective June 30, and set the ceiling for rice purchases at Bt500,000 from each farming household.

Governors nationwide are meeting with local rice mill owners and managers to check their stocks and create understanding among them.

In the northern province of Phitsanulok, farmers have been selling their rice to 25 local rice mill operators from nine districts ahead of the deadline as they fear rice prices may fall due to the predicted heavy rain within a couple of days.

Meanwhile, farmers in Thailand's northeastern province of Maha Sarakham also moved their paddy for sale at local rice mills for the current rice pledging price at Bt15,000/tonne.

Lamun Sipongying, a farmer in the provincial seat, said the rice mill where she sold her paddy today gave her Bt11,000/tonne of rice. She said that her rice was cheaper from the current pledge price at Bt15,000 was because the value of the rice was deducted due to moisture in the grain. If the government is to lower the price guarantee to Bt12,000/tonne, she then fears that she will earn almost no profit. (MCOT online news)

RICE-PLEDGING
MPs to diffuse farmers' agony

BANGKOK: -- Government MPs have been assigned to diffuse negative sentiments among farmers, following the National Rice Policy Committee's decision to revise down the rice-pledging price from Bt15,000 to Bt12,000 per tonne.

Pheu Thai spokesman Prompong Nopparit said Friday that the MPs would explain to farmers in their constituencies on the necessary revision. They would also gather farmers’ proposals on how the government can help. The proposals would be presented to the government next week, he said.

He noted that the government has considered supporting measures, primarily to help reduce the production cost and increase rice quality.

Farmers in key provinces plan to stage a protest in Bangkok. The rice-pledging price is cut, following criticisms that the scheme may cost over Bt100 billion in damage for each harvest year.

Loss in the 2011/2012 harvest year amounted to nearly Bt140 billion.

Perhaps the governors can explain to the rice farmers that the money they are being paid for rice that can't be sold might otherwise be providing infrastructure and services for them as well as the non-rice-growing citizens of the country. Surely they are intelligent and educated enough to look beyond pure self-interest and see the bigger picture.

Good luck with that.

Why did you have to go and ruin your piece with that last sentence (unless sarcasm has crept into proceedings, that is) )!!!!biggrin.png.

"the government has considered supporting measures, primarily to help reduce the production cost"

Perhaps a rent freeze or limit before initiating this policy would have gone a long way to help poor farmers, by stopping renting landowners from profiting from the policy.

Altruism is not a word often used in conjunction with Shinawatras or PTP.

Is it me, or are all the TV supporters of this awesome government very quiet for a while?

You might want to speak to voter's if you want to get a government of your choice.

No, it's not you - they are hiding in the shadows out of pure embarrassement at the moment as they are completely devoid of any argument and they are at risk of being cut to shreds should they try to defend this government!!!

At least its cool in the shade.clap2.gif.

I would say to these farmers "Smell the Palaa" you've been conned again, and still you'll vote for them in the next elections, do they never wake up??

As past history implies on this:

Apparently not!! They were born blinkered and shall spend the rest of their poverty stricken lives blinkered.

It's a shame I suppose, but they only have their eternal stupidity to blame for this.

BTW, welcome to the forum!!

I can't seem to locate the articles covering Yingluck on the campaign trail when she made the mistake of agreeing to her supporters shouting for 20,000B per tonne when the party message was 15,000

Her "mistake" ended up costing billions of taxpayers' money

I think the rices scheme is a disaster BUT I also think it is quite unfair to adjust the price of the rice in the ground AFTER the farmer has shouldered the costs associated with that rice - esp as the costs have been rising due to the scheme.

Why not make it 33,333 baht a ton, as that is a very lucky number in Thailand!!!wai2.gif.

This lot need to face reality, the rice is too expensive and no one is buying it!

------------------

I'm here right now in Vietnam.

There was commentary in English on a Vietnamese news show I was watching last week.

It seems the rice farmers in Vietnam have had good years the last 3 years or so.

This year 2013 should continue that trend.

The sales of Vietnamese rice is booming .... high demand.

They can offer a better price than their competition now for the same quality of rice.

As the commentator specifically said, "because we now no longer have any realistic competition for rice sales from Thailand in particular."

I'm sure the Vietnamese rice farmers would like to thank the Thai government personally for that.

No!!!!! No!!!!, not true,

How can this be true when it was Thaksin's brain child??? The Vietmanese have clearly been brainwashed into believing this.

Afterall, Yingluck say's (has been told) that the rice pledging scheme has been a great success and as well as boosting the economy it has been a boon for the farmers!!!

Just curious but is the Vietnamese farmer gaining or is it the middlemen that are gaining?

By the way, I read in another paper that the farmers here would be happy to accept the 12,000 baht but since they never got the actual 15,000 baht they don't expect to get the 12,000 baht.

This is exactly what the guy who rents my wifes paddy is so pissed off about. He probably won't be harvesting until the beginning of July but was counting on the higher pledge price.

He reckons only just above breakeven after all his increased costs are taken into consideration.

Most mills seem to be paying about 12k saying excessive moisture in the rice grain so a 20% cut. A similar percentage from the beginning of July and the new lower pledge price suggests the farmers may get 9600 per tonne, 10k if their lucky.
