That sounds interesting!

Featured Replies

How does one say that in Thai? I dug up this from TLC:

ข้อแก้ตัวของเขาฟังสนิทหูดี

khaawF gaaeF dtuaaM khaawngR khaoR fangM saL nitL huuR deeM

which is translated as "His excuse sounded really good."

Also แปลกหู means strange sounding, so can one say น่าสนใจหู to means 'sounds interesting'?

I don't think they say that it "sounds" interesting in Thai.

I sometimes use "ดูเหมือนน่าสนใจ" when I want to say something sounds interesting. But I might be wrong.

How about ฟังดูน่าสนใจ?

น่าสนใจ would be enough or น่าสนใจดี or น่าสนใจมากๆ

There's really no need to say ฟัง or ดู

น่าสน is too short

Edited by Mole

น่าสน is just the right length. Shorter is better and being understood is the most important thing. น่าสนใจ is too LONG and drawn out within a flow of conversation.

Why do you think it's too short, so factually too?

An unhelpful and inflammatory post removed.

8) Not to post extremely negative views of Thailand or derogatory comments directed towards all Thais.

น่าสนใจ

I think 'sonjai' is one of those words always mis-translated, most of the uses I hear it means 'worry'.

mai tong bai son jai = no need to worry.

Can't see it as 'interested'.

But what do I know.

This is because สนใจ means to care or interested.

น่าสนใจ means "sounds interesting" or "I'm interested".

น่าสน would just be a shortened version of น่าสนใจ

But you won't find just น่าสน in any dictionaries. You however will find สนใจ and น่าสนใจ.

I disagree in this case that shorter would make you better understood.

Just say น่าสนใจ, it's just 1 short syllable more and it will make it perfectly clear regardless of context.

ไม่ต้องสนใจ can mean "don't worry" but directly translated it means more like "don't care about it".

ไม่ต้องห่วง would directly mean "don't worry".

'May I ask, in English, what is the difference between:

1. that sounds interesting

2. that is interesting

And if there is a difference, how would you show the difference in Thai?

The reason I used "ดูเหมือนน่าสนใจ" is that I thought that:

"sounds interesting" means that you've the impression it is interesting,

which is (in my opinion) less strong than saying it "it is interesting".

I believed that:

- and สนใจ means interested. So, in my opinion "I'm interested in ..." is "ผมสนใจ..."

- "น่าสนใจ" just means interesting. An "interesting proposal" would be "ข้อเสนอน่าสนใจ"

- and ดูเหมือนน่าสนใจ means it looks interesting or it sounds interesting. "The proposal sounds interesting" would be "ข้อเสนอดูเหมือนน่าสนใจ"

PS. "ดูเหมือนน่าสนใจ" (with quotes) has 109000 hits on google

ดูเหมือน in Thai means "looks as though, seems as though" and can be used in maybe contexts, also when talking about things you can't actually see.

ข้อเสนอดูเหมือนน่าสนใจ would make it sound "as if" it's interesting, but not really.

If you insist in using ดู you must not use เหมือน because ดูเหมือน means "as if, but not really".

In this case you should only use ข้อเสนอดูน่าสนใจ

You could also use ดูเหมือน to describe an object which looks like something else.

So, yes, in this case, it's better to make it shorter and concise, but not too short.

ข้อเสนอน่าสนใจ will definitely not be misunderstood.

Is หน้า used generally to mean "sounds"? Could one say หน้าสนุก, as in:

A: I went to a fancy dress party last night.

B: That sounds fun.

หน้า means "face" or "in front of"

น่า means something like "seems" or "looks like".

Both are pronounced identical.
