Christchurch man critical after Bangkok balcony fall
By Anna Leask

BANGKOK: -- A Christchurch man was on life support last night in Thailand after falling from a fourth-storey balcony as he tried to get into an apartment he had locked himself out of.

Robbie Robinson, 32, suffered life-threatening head injuries when he fell 14 days ago.

Ireland's Evening Herald reported that Mr Robinson had been out socialising with friends in Bangkok and arrived back at the fourth floor apartment where he was staying but did not have his keys.

He attempted to climb up to the apartment's balcony, but lost his footing and fell.

Mr Robinson's family, including his sister Kim who lives in Queenstown, have rushed to his bedside in Thailand.

Born in Ireland, Mr Robinson emigrated to Christchurch a few years ago. He returned to his hometown of Ashford, south of Dublin in County Wicklow, last month for a friend's wedding.

He stopped in Thailand on his way home to Christchurch to see another friend, and had been in Bangkok only three days when the accident happened. [more...]

The story is messed up. He attempted to climb up to fl. 15 to wake up a tenant 'cause he didn't have his key, then climb back down? Wouldn't he have contacted security/the office/whatever? Lots of drinks would make it unlikely he could have climbed up to begin with. Hard to believe it. Another sad balcony diving story.

If he was visiting and presumably staying at a friend's apartment I wonder where they were when he attempted his climb. Somebody must have witnessed it since it doesn't sound like he is in any shape to explain the how and why. I hope he manages a miraculous recovery.

I think you read it wrong. The 15th floor fall was a guy in Auckland..different from the one here. And he knocked on an upstairs neighbor's door and tried to go down to his balcony from her room.

Didn't the same thing happen to a Brit last month?

Another Kiwi as was the death last month with the same scenario.

It's a wonder that they have been put down to attempted suicide/suicides to cut down on paperwork.

I takes more effort to do your 90 day reporting than the cops expend on a serious crime investigation.

I see...equally as bizarre nonetheless!

Slow newsmorning? Drunk Irishman falling from building two weeks ago. Hardly worth a headline?

On a sidenote. 700 was killed in Iraq last month!

WHO SAID HE WAS DRUNK?

Irish, night out, climbing up the side of a building... 2+2 = ? so he was either "very" drunk or very dumb & dumber, Of course I hope he recovers fully so he can climb another day.

I must admit that I have locked myself out of my flat a few times.

I walked down the street to find a cheap hotel. Took about 15 minutes.

Paid 500 Baht. Next morning got mgt to open it for me.

This is Thailand, there are cheap hotels everywhere. I guess this guy did not know that.

So what? Ef Iraq. This is Thailand and somewhere, somehow something seriously NEEDS to be DONE about these Thai people. a Good friend of mine, in Bangkok saw a foreigner being MURDERED by a mob of Thais while police were actually WATCHING the incident taking place. Two of these 'EYE-WITNESS' cops then took the corpse to a nearby local Temple and instructed Monks there to burn it. There after they only reported the matter BUT as being an road ACCIDENT, not a murder at all. The family of the victim was then oh so 'SADLY' informed of his misfortune.

Likewise with regards to my problem. Wife and family just took every single DIME possessed by me and because one of them just so HAPPENS to be a prominent government official here NOBODY, not ONE Thai, that is now would even take a second LOOK at my complaint. Not the POLICE nor any LAWYER. I was actually TOLD in person by a very SENIOR law official here that the Thai Law ONLY helps Thai people.

So your 'friend' also followed them to the temple as well...............and obviously lived to tell the tale.

I don't think.

Why is it so difficult to accept this was an injury due to "misadventure". There is no indication that suicide is involved, so why mention it?

This isn't the first time someone has misjudged his abilities and attempted to climb up a building. 4 storeys doesn't seem much to some people, and the judgement can be altered depending upon the circumstances. Nothing is mentioned about a fight or being pushed. If the chap had been pushed from his balcony, he wouldn't have been locked out of his apartment would he?

Too much logic GK. They won't get it wink.png

That depends upon whether or not he had his keys with him when he was pushed and he didn't lose them in the fall . laugh.png
