A friend of mine has just been given a 7 day emergency extension at Chiang Mai immigration. He knows he must leave the country by the end of this period. Does anyone know a) can he go to Mae Sai and get a further 15 days? B) can he leave the country and fly back in and get another 30 days. c) is he persona non grata once he leaves? Any advice greatly appreciated.

It is probably is not a emergency extension (none exists that I know of) just the standard refused extension application 7 days to leave. He certainly would not be on any black list for getting the extension.

He can do the border run and get 15 days or 30 days by air with no problem if he qualifies for visa exempt entries.

Thanks Ubonjoe. His worry is that if he goes to Mae Sai for the 15 days and gets refused - standard procedure up there would be to give him a 7 day stamp and tell him to get out of Thailand after that, - trouble is, he's already had one of these 7 day stamps and doesn't want to get stranded in Burma.

Yeah particularly with that part of Burma/Myanmar having restricted entry rules meaning that legally, he wouldn't be allowed to travel to Yangon from Tachilek or Kengtung, even by air, without having secured a permit or having arrived at another port of entry on a valid visa first.

While I doubt he will have any problems because Thai immigration knows the rules regarding Shan State in Burma, they would thus provide a small window in which to organize flights/other transport out of the country, by going to Laos he wouldn't get stranded at all and could still enter China/Vietnam/Cambodia with a valid visa from there or just fly out of Vientiane or Luang Prabang - it's easy to avoid Bangkok that way. However, while we don't know why he has previously been handed such a 7-day stamp, it does sound like he won't have any problems despite this.

It is not the same stamp. The one at border would be issued with different wording.

He should not have a problem getting a 15 day entry unless he has already done 4 of them back to back. If that is the case he should fly out and back or go to a different border crossing or get a tourist visa in Viantiane.

I think that it depends on the reason of the "emergency"-extension; if it was an emergency-extension

The 7 days extension are given pretty easy now, but a few years ago, you needed a damn good reason in order to get those 7 days.

AFAIK there should be no problem when he leaves the country and re-enters by land or air.

There is no extension type that is called a emergency extension.

What they apparently have done at the border is given a 7 day entry with a notation stating the person can no longer get entries at Mae Sai.

There is no clause in the police order for extensions that would allow only a 7 day extension. What they do is accept the application, collect 1900 baht and then put a stamp in passport that says application was denied that gives 7 days to leave.

There are some extension clauses that allow a longer extension such as medical treatment, requested by your embassy and etc. though.
