webfact Posted July 17, 2013 Share Posted July 17, 2013 Chalerm reveals labor preparation plans to strengthen national economyBANGKOK, 17 July 2013 (NNT) - Police Captain Chalerm Yubumrung, Minister of Labor has entrusted the Department of Skill Development (DSD) to conduct a detailed study into the labor market for vocational students in order to ensure their job placement and strengthen the economy.Speaking after his meeting with senior DSD officials, the new Labor Minister said the DSD Director General will establish a working group to gather statistical information on the number of vocational institutions and students produced each year, together with their fields of studies. Once getting a clear-cut data, the DSD will arrange a workshop to introduce the students to the labor market. The DSD will also consider job training for graduates who need higher skill development.Pol.Capt.Chalerm said the ministry would also send some successful students for overseas jobs to increase their experience. He expected the DSD to come up with an action plan on these developments within a month.As for the call by some labor leaders for him to resign if he could not achieve any progress within 3 months, Pol.Capt. Chalerm asked the public for understanding and to allow him to work to his full capacity. Chalerm asked the public for understanding and to allow him to work to his full capacity. He's definitely off the ball. Of course, no mention is made about whether the number of students "produced" learned anything about their fields of studies or if they are qualified (per international industrial standards) to perform adequately in those fields. Oh wait, of course they are qualified. If they weren't qualified, how could their families pay for their degrees and positions in the companies hiring them? The latest figures from the NSO show that as of may there was 330,000 people unemployed, some 230,000 under employed and from memory 395,000 people seasonally unemployed. While i don't like the man, what he is propossing makes perfect sense if the needs of industry are going to be met as labour intensive industries realise that Thailand is no longer the place for making $1 t-shirts any more and either evolve or move to somewhere with cheaper labour costs.
