Steel security door

Featured Replies

I'd like to add a steel security door to my condo unit:

It is not the same as the welded doors with rifle-bolt/padlock-hasp type of door with attachable fly screens that is ubiquitous in Thailand. Instead of a screen the door is actually a steel mesh, and the door has a normal handle and deadbolt lock.

I asked once before and was told Kanyong (I'm in Pattaya) had them. They didn't, so I gave up my quest. Now that I may be moving back into my condo I'm pursuing it again. Anybody seen one of these for sale in Thailand?

I had mine made by the same people that make the standard security doors. It has a regular handle and deadbolt. The bottom half is solid steel due to the fact that I have many dogs. The upper half is normal fly screen, but could easily be replaced with welded in decorative mesh. You are most likely going to have to have it custom made to your requirements, but the local shops should be able to do it!

On another forum I got a link to Majestec.com, and in e-mail correspondence with them got a rough estimate of B30,000+ for a door. These commonplace doors in the US are US$80 (~THB2,500) at regular price, and routinely go on sale for about $65 (~THB2,000). Quite a price difference! It might be cheaper to ship one and pay shipping, extortionate customs duties, and VAT. I wonder what condition it would be in when it arrived here.

Here's a close-up of the door on my house in California. I had my sister snap some photos when she visited my Mom (who's 95 yrs old and going strong!):

It's a one-piece, non-removable steel mesh attached (welded?) to the door perimeter frame. Is there someplace that would sell stamped steel mesh in a roughly 90cm x 190cm size? If so, I wouldn't mind going to one place to buy the mesh and take it to the door welder to fasten it into place. I wouldn't mind a smaller (~90cm x 95cm?) size mesh for a door like wayned has with a solid bottom. either.

If you do find one, paint before you install it. That US steel mesh rusts in about 4-5 years in the tropics.

Good point, thanks for that reminder. You might be able to tell from that pic that the steel on that door has some minor rust issues -- and that's in the S.California desert! I think a good couple coats of Rustoleum before assembly, and then touch-ups at any points where the paint was disturbed during assembly, may be a reasonable insurance policy.
