Information on the Music Business in Thailand.

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know where I can find out any information on the Thai music business?

My son who is 20 is half Thai and speaks Thai. He lives in the UK and has a recording contract with a UK record company. He is not a pop artist. His genre is Prog Rock. This type of music has proven popularity in Thailand with Western artists such as Dream Theater.

The fact he has the Thai connection could open another market to him, in addition to the US/European market and he would likely have an appeal in Thailand over and above the usual Western audience. In fact he already has a large number of Thai followers on Facebook.

The UK record company could likely sell CDs in Thailand, distributed as any other Western artist would be, but it would probably need a Thai company or promoter to take advantage fully of the Thai connection. The UK company have no knowledge of the way in which the Thai music business works (other than that its very different to the UK).

Does anyone know where we can find any info, or any contacts in the Thai music business?

You want to get in touch with either MGM Grammy Entertainment or RS Promotion, the two largest music companies in Thailand.

Both of them operate websites and with a little research and calling them up it should be easy for you to arrange a meeting with either to negotiate a potential record/marketing deal.

However, be prepared that they most likely will offer a cut-throat contract securing themselves a considerable percentage of any revenues generated from such a deal, as well as binding your son exclusively to their label.

Good luck!

He doesn't need to get in touch with them, his UK record Company does! They will not even listen to him. My problem steams from the fact that if his UK record company doesn't know this, what sort of recording company is it, and would the Thai recording companies even listen to them? Edited by BrianCR

Oops, I missed the point that the son apparently already is under contract by a UK record company. In that case it would of course be the UK company's duty to get in touch with one or another Thai counterpart.
