I am filling in a family visit visa application for my mother in law in part 7 it asks about relative details asking about the name of the relative you will be staying with as son in law is not in the drop down box I would assume I use my wife's details and the select daughter.

I will be sponsoring my mother in laws trip to the UK so in the sponsors letter it will be my details i.e. bank statements and so on, will this be a problem when they come to access the visa? any advice would be great, Thank you

No, it wont be a problem.

For both my step son and sister in law's visits both my wife and I signed the sponsor's letter. I also supplied bank statements and pay slips for us both, but if your wife isn't working then don't worry, just supply yours.

It's not an unusual situation and the ECOs will have seen it before.

in this part of the form it says

In the last two years, has the relative that you are staying with sponsored anyone else's visit to the UK?

I would assume that as I have put my wife's name down as the relative, with whom she will be staying with, then I would select NO.

I have sponsored my wife during the 2 years that they are asking about, but I take it as, it is her name as the relative not mine than that is the correct answer.

To be on the safe side, I would put in the additional information box or in your covering letter that you have sponsored your wife in the last two years.

Thank you for that, I will put it in the additional information and in a covering letter.

One last question in the part it asks about income my wife's mother does washing and ironing for people in and around her home she gets about 9000 Baht per month, she can not prove this income so should I put it down on the form or just leave the income part as zero?

Thank you very much for your help thus far.

Unless you are sending her enough money each month to live on, putting zero means the ECO will wonder what she lives on.

Put the average amount she earns and then in your supporting letter say why she has no proof of income.

From the example supporting letter in UK Visit Visa Basics (which is actually the one we used for my sister-in-law's application).

Part 5, employment.
X has no full time employment, but obtains what casual work she is able to, from working in a market to decorating and laying floors in houses and shops. This gives her an income of between 7000 and 8000 baht per month. Her rent, food etc. comes to about 7000 baht per month and so we send her some extra money when she needs it. This is done via our joint bank account and our bank statements will show the amount and frequency of these payments.

Showing that the applicant is well established in Thailand and can support herself there, with or without assistance from her daughter in the UK, has a lot to do with the ECO believing that she will return after the visit.

You have given your opinion, I have given mine.

Up to the OP whether he follows your advice, mine or a different course altogether.

She takes in washing for cash, that is surely a reason not to return! And certainly doesn't prove she is well established or can support herself without financial help from the daughter. And, why on earth would it even matter if the daughter supported her in full from the UK? She's only going on bloody holiday!!!!

The ECOs, I am sure, do not go into the same level of detail as you.

He, along with his wife, are funding the trip for a poor in-law. That's all that matters.

OP, you may also want to purchase some travel insurance to ensure she will not be a strain on UK coffers in the event of sickness etc.

Where it asks how much money is available to you, does this mean how much money does she have or can I include the money that I shall be giving her when she arrives in the UK.

Thank you very much

In my sister-in-laws application for Q 5.15 I put a nominal amount; £20 p.w. if memory serves. For Qs 5.16, 5.17 and 5.18 I put me and for 5.19 I put nil.

Then in my supporting letter I put

Q5.15 to 5.19
I will be paying for her airfare and (my wife) and I will provide accommodation and food free of charge. Therefore I anticipate that her expenditure whilst in the UK will be minimal.

We did the same for my step-son's application.

Thank you for the reply I will be giving my mother in law £400 when she gets here so where it asks the question below I would put the £400 there and in the covering letter explain I will also be paying for the flight and there would not be any charge for food or accommodation.

iF SOMEONE OTHER THAN YOURSELF IS PAYING FOR ALL OR ANY PART OF THIS VISIT, HOW MUCH MONEY WILL THEY GIVE YOU?
