i plan to buy a small one of these and put it in my luggage ,apart from the drive shaft which will need to be snipped and then rewelded at the other end .

but where to buy a Honda small motor with the drive shaft and prop ? any ideas where in BKK ? klong toey are a or where ??

i dont expect to need to much HP so a small engine size . you cant buy these outside LOS so it seems .

I don't know a lot about long tail boats but I would imagine that any old air cooled motorbike engine

could be easily adapted to mount on a boat as they do here.

I also think there must be hundreds of second hand m/bike shops or scrapyards in UK where you could

probably purchase aforementioned engine quite cheaply.

I would hazard a guess that that is exactly how long tail boats came about in Thailand???

I recall some years ago seeing one with an old morris minor engine mounted up radiator and all on a

fishing boat. ( gold seal it was, some of the older guys will know what I am talking about )

I could be wrong, but I read somewhere that it all started with British army lorries in about 1946 that were being broken down ( or otherwise put into use ) because it was too expensive to ship them back to UK.

Someone stuck an engine on boat and it went from there.

its a good idea on inland waterways that have too little water or varying depth to use a normal outboard motor ,and weeds cloging up the prop .

having a drive that you can swing in and out adjusting the depth is a brill idea .

I'd be surprised if nanny state UK would allow it. It's basicly a ten foot pivoting pole with a blade on the end.

You'd at least need to have an elf n safty hard hat, googles and florescent vest on and that'd be just to get ya close enough for the emissions test.

I'd do your research first, because jobsworths have managed to ban most things involving fun, entertainment, joy or thought in the UK.

I hope you can pull it off though. Good luck.

I had a Salmon Coble with a Moggy 1000 engine in it. Marinised too.

Long time ago...... 1980's ?

Aye, lad, them were the days.

Do boats have to be Registered/Licensed if they are operated on the UK Public Waterways?

seems they do ,but its more aimed at house boats and cruisers with LPG on board ,and generally bigger boats where accidents are more likely to occur.

this is more in the rowing boat bracket with a small motor .

i have used motorized inflatables before and never had a licence .and a powerboat with an outboard motor .

That was a great clip ... never seen that one before ... thumbsup.gif

When the guy attaches the big chrome moulding to the drive side of the motor about 2.30 ... that chrome bit that looks like a knob is actually the Thai version of a grease nipple and to lubricate the shaft you fill both the cup and the lid. As you screw the lid down, it forces the grease down the shaft.

In the fishing forum, one of the guys was trying to work it out as he had a shaft vibration and he fitted a greese nipple before I could explian to him how to lube it. But he's happy with the Western style nipple.

The experts fitted the throttle controls easily .. I bet, in reality, they would be much trickier to do!

I did reply on your other similar thread when asking about the plans.

Enjoy and good luck.

Why would you bother trying to ship a small aircooled Honda engine to the UK when somebody else has already done it for you. Check out the Honda engine suppliers in the UK nearest to your abode. If you want something bigger then the other engines that are used are the Yanmar and Kubota 10 - 15 Hp stationery engines (all of them are!). They have just been modified to fit the Itaan or longtail.smile.png Cheers!

Most just look like car engines to me. You can buy boat motors in the UK. How heavy are they, if they are old 4 cylinder car engines then you're looking at possibly 150 kg.

i guess the more you look into it ,it might need just the shaft and prop and controls ,once 1 is done you have experience to make the parts ,there are kits of parts on eb a y .KKK have other vids on youtube .

the motors look very stable on the KKK vids ,no hand on the tiller and it keeps going straight.

the prop cover housing looks the hardest bit to make.

will checkout Honda suppliers giving them the right motor code

yep the Honda engines are easilly available on the bay and local Honda dealers for not too much money .

so that just leaves the drive shaft kit to source from LOS .

the design of the sampan boat looks not too difficult ,its based on a coffin with a upturn at the front which shouldn't be to hard to make from marine ply with hardwood frame parts .

so not a big outlay for all the parts to make .
