Grease Traps: Do You Have One That Actually Works?

Featured Replies

The last (and only) grease trap I bought looked as if it was an OK design but in practice it doesn't work well. Somehow the grease gets out of the basket which is supposed to catch it and the whole enclosure gets globbed up with great big lumps of .......well, you really don't want to know.

I have to buy another next week for our new house and I wondered if anyone here had one that really does the job.

Also, given a family of four cooking most meals at home, how often would you expect to have to empty the trap?

Forgive my ignorance but what exactly are you calling a grease trap and where does it go?

You're forgiven! It's one of these.....

... and filters out the food waste and the fat from waste water from your kitchen before it goes to a soakaway or a leechfield.

This isn't the model I bought, by the way.

Uhm, the best way to prevent grease from bugging your plumbing is to NOT put grease down the drain. Whether you have a trap or not, grease will plug things up eventually.

I couldn't agree more but you can't really expect that ethos to go without a hitch in a family situation. Certainly doesn't work in mine although they try their best smile.png

I did stop bleach down the toilet on a daily basis and the septic tank has been very grateful.

I have one, COTTO brand. It does a good job at retaining food waste but I seem to have the same problem as you have with the grease waste. It does keep some but some exit the trap too, hard to say how much though. it is connected to the kitchen sink only and It gets cleaned once a month as the grease will build up inside, frequency depends on how much waste you are putting through of course so check it regularly at first to have an idea. We are trying to minimized the waste going through it as much as we can.
