GENEVA, Sept 10 – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has reiterated Thailand’s adherence to the principles of human rights and freedom of the people with respect to the voice of the minority.

In her speech at the 24th meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council here yesterday, she said democracy was not only about an election victory by the majority but about exercising power while honouring the minority.

People in power must neither hold on to power nor indoctrinate others, she said.

She said her government has followed international standard on equality and giving opportunities to women, children and the disabled, and cooperated regionally to promote human rights given challenges in the region.

Thailand has experienced challenges in its fight for democracy in the last several decades and the path remains rocky, she said.

Ms Yingluck added that she had to personally protect democracy from non-democratic people, bearing in mind that democracy, human rights, justice system and rules of law were universal values that bind people and different nations together.

The Thai prime minister arrived in Switzerland on the first leg of her one-week European tour which also includes Italy, the Vatican City and Montenegro. (MCOT online news)

Yingluck, if you claim to be protecting democracy, why didn't you allow Sam Rainsy to enter Thailand a few months back?

(Cambodian opposition leader Sam) Rainsy had been set to launch his new book "We Didn't Start the Fire: My Struggle for Democracy in Cambodia" at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand Wednesday night, but said from Singapore yesterday that he had been turned away by immigration

Yingluck, were you afraid of this?

Looking at the situation optimistically, with 55 seats in parliament, the opposition is the strongest it has ever been. As a result, Hun Sen, the ruling strongman for nearly three decades, has been considerably weakened already.

It is too bad that the international press is not allowed to ask her questions after the speech and pin her down on her hypocrisy

Oh Yes and as she is not at home her giggle, smile and walking away would get get shredded when it was reported

UPDATE:
PM: Kofi Annan to join next unity forum in Bangkok

GENEVA, 10 September 2013 (NNT) - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has confirmed that former UN secretary-general Kofi Annan will join the next round of the Thai government-initiated unity forum.

Speaking after her meeting with Mr. Annan on the sidelines of the United Nations Human Rights Council conference in Geneva, Ms Yingluck said she discussed with Mr Annan the Thai government’s reconciliation efforts and its success in holding a series of forum entitled “Uniting for the Future: Learning from each other’s experience.”

Ms Yingluck said Mr Annan has affirmed his participation after he was unable to make it last time due to prior engagements. The September 2 forum in Bangkok was joined by former British prime minister Tony Blair.

Prime Minister Yingluck earlier addressed the council in Geneva, saying she has had to defend the Kingdom’s democracy from undemocratic minds and that Thailand continues to support democratic values by protecting people's rights and liberty.

Nobody is allowed to ask her questions. Even in parliament she doesn't answer questions. She has never had a debate with anyone.

All very democratic principles

I think most of the sentiments expressed here are pretty spot on , talk about calling the pot black , the Prime Minister is hell bent on clearing her brothers name , she addresses the Un on human rights, the same body that was investigating the PM's brother a few years back for atrocities in the North and South of Thailand ,on Thaskins watch , Yingluck has the hide of a rino, miss Teflon 2013 , everything slides off.bah.gifbah.gifbah.gif

Is that trying to protect democracy from her fugitive criminal brother? if it is inferring on the world stage that her scummy Shinawatra mafia family follow democratic principles then she is really a stupid bitch.

Sam Rainsy Is not on the Thaksin Shinawatra approved list. He is trying to unseat a dictator who is a personal friend of Thaksin's.

Any one against dictatorship is on Thaksin's hit list. Being a dictator is some thing Thaksin greatly aspires to.

Two words come to mind stupid or naive.

Thailand is over run with drugs and there was no drug lords killed or even prosecuted.

Out of the 2,500 killed 1,500 were shone to be innocent.
