Govt dealing with conditions set by insurgency group, next meeting set for mid-October as scheduled : NSC

BANGKOK: -- THE NATIONAL Security Council is advising the Thai public and media to pay no heed to the demands being made by Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) through channels other than official ones, a senior NSC adviser said yesterday.

Colonel Jaroon Ampha said the fourth meeting with BRN would certainly go ahead in mid-October as scheduled, adding that the written preconditions submitted by the group has been delivered to Thai authorities through Malaysia, which has been working as the facilitator of the peace talks. The 30-page document written in English is being translated into Thai before it will be distributed to all relevant agencies for study, he added.

The agencies will submit their analyses of the BRN preconditions as well as their recommendations to a new government centre led by Deputy Prime Minister Pracha Promnog. This centre will finalise the analyses and recommendations before the next round of the dialogue.

The adviser said he would like all sides to take into account only official statements from Thai authorities in response to the BRN preconditions.

"Do not worsen the situation by conveying whatever [future] messages are distributed on the social media, as that would only pressure the Thai authorities, who are on your side.

"Doing this would not be good. We would want the Thai media to report on what is credible and practical," the colonel advised.

Looking for reaction

The BRN has previously used YouTube to post video clips to test the waters and gauge the Thai public's reaction to its demands, he said, adding that the media should |not allow itself to be used by the BRN.

The next meeting should be held no later than the third week of October if all parties - including Malaysia - are ready, Jaroon said.

Meanwhile, 104 insurgents have been arrested in the wake of several incidents and raids, while 32 others gave themselves over to the authorities between July and September, the Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc) said at a press conference yesterday.

During that period, security forces foiled or detected nine gunfights, 24 bomb attacks and ambushes, and 73 criminal cases, in addition to 62 violations related to drugs and seven to contraband oil, Isoc said.

Separately, Deputy Government Spokeswoman Sunisa Lertpakawat said Democrat MP Thavorn Senniam's statement that the |government had no clear direction in dealing with the violence in the deep South was untrue and biased. The government is asking the opposition Democrat Party not to address BRN negatively so the atmosphere surrounding the negotiations is more productive on the Thai side.

And yet the killings continue. Never mind, I'm sure the new budget will sort things out. thumbsup.gif

A shambles led by incompetents.

With all the effort going into solving the problems, and making for a peaceful solution in the south, as well as the human, women, religious, and immigrant rights concerns in Thailand, I can forsee a nobel peace prize nomination being proposed.

Just have to find a sponser and a nominee who are the same wave link/family tree.
