Halal slaughter of animals, similar to Shechita slaughter (Jewish observant) are in many ways better than the routine slaughter of meat animals by 'normal' abbatoirs.

The animals are separated before killing, thus there is less panic prior to the animal being killed.

The animal is quickly slaiughtered by one quick knife stroke, not stunned, kept waiting in line prior to the final blow.

The knife stroke is accurate always. The stunning bolt often misses it's target and a second, or even third bolt has to be used.

The slaughterer knows he is performing a religious function and prays to his God over each animal, thus exhibiting a degree of compassion for the animal he is killing, knowing it is necessary to provide food for his fellow human beings. The abbatoir worker is just there to draw wages at the end of the week, with no compassion for the animals he slaughters.

I realise that neither is performing a job that most people would willingly carry out, but is it better to do it purely for the money or because one truly believes that is a task approved by one's God?

Sadly, the British press didn't think it was worth reporting, as they don't many similar meetings and rallies.

An extremist cleric gets onto his hind legs and calls for sharia law, condones the murder of a British soldier or whatever; the press consider that news and will splash it all over their front pages.

A Muslim group hold a protest about the extremists, saying that these people don't speak for them; the press don't consider it worth reporting.

In a culture where animals matter more than people, and a lot more than religious people, halal and kosher are verboten. Already, we have Denmark banning ritual slaughter. Jews and Muslims in the country are outraged and have staged protests to no avail.

Denmark bans kosher and halal slaughter as minister for agriculture and food Dan Jørgensen says animal rights come before religion. This should read that the exemption given to religious belief has been closed.

Imagine a situation where slavery was banned except for those with religious belief. Would that be acceptable?
