Shots fired as armed man fails to stop at East Pattaya Police Checkpoint



PATTAYA: -- Just before 4.30 am on Sunday Nongprue Police arrested a 38 year old man who failed to stop at a Police Checkpoint. He was found in possession of a licensed firearm which reportedly belonged to a Police Officer and the suspect claimed he knew many high ranking Officers and should not have been stopped.

Nongprue Police held a press conference to confirm the arrest of Khun Surapon aged 38 who was driving a Bronze Chevrolet Captiva. A second man in the car was released without charge.

The Checkpoint was set-up in Soi Tamnan and the suspect and his vehicle failed to stop when asked to, which led to a chase, during which a Police Officer shot once into the air in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The driver did eventually pull-over in front of Soi 10 in the same road.

Initially he refused to exit the vehicle and verbally abused officers and claimed he had friends in high places who would cause the officers many problems. The suspect was later identified by one of the Police Volunteers as a member of a Music Copyright team who illegally seize audio equipment from businesses and demand payment to return the equipment.

Maybe the police officer that the gun is registered to is realizing the folly of his thinking lending it to this idiot, if he did so. If there had been an incident where the weapon was discharged, it would trace right back to him.

I would be wishful if the arresting officers really did pursue this if only to let this fool know how many high ranking friends he does actually have, or not as the case may be.

This would be another case of it's the farang's fault, who (investigation would show) had actually paid the man to run the checkpoint so the shot could be an inmsurance scam. Evil farang.

It's very frightening all those scumbags carrying weapons (many times cops involved "selling" them)

I was once rather surprised at how many deaths/injuries are caused by "celebratory" (firing into the air/upward) bullets...

Because of the bullet falling down again after having lost its its momentum?

Seems like an average handgun bullet travels around 1.3 miles / ~ 2km (http://askville.amazon.com/shooting-gun-bullet-travel/AnswerViewer.do?requestId=3928729). Maybe my Newton is a bit rusty, but this tells me the falling bullet would have a final drop speed like

v = sqrt(2*a*d) = sqrt(2 * 9.82 m/s^2 * 2000 m) ~ 198 m/s ~ 713 km/h ~ 443 miles/h

Could do some damage all right.

P.S.: How on earth do people do these calculations using emperial units? :-s
