It was a Sunday and I had the grand sum of 20 baht in my pocket. Hotels (not many at that time) would cash travellers cheques, but not ATM/credit cards. At there time there were NO ATMs in Udon, and in desperation I paid my last 20 baht to a tuk tuk driver to take me to the airport where I found the only ATM in this [part of Issan. (Just don't bother when you want to buy Dollars - Krung Thai bank at central has even small denominations (useful for your Lao visa fee).
