Tonight there is a fundraiser on Thai TV at 8:30. I commented on it at the Bangkok Post, but the moderators never posted it. You can also donate directly to the manila chapter of the red cross, which I recommend (all things considered). I sent 6000 baht yesterday. It is cheap to be a hero today. For 1000 baht, the cost of a couple bottles of Pipers, a family of four will have rice and medicine in 2-3 days, instead of the 1-2 weeks it will take for the Western cavalry to arrive and take action. If you read the article above, that means those without food for the last five days will die before the Big Guys can arrive. This is not prediction, it is fact. Human beings cannot live without food for 19 days. There is, therefore; the real prospect of cannibalism. It is cheap to be a hero today. If I asked you in person, and showed how there was no scam involved, I know half of you would do it. The help incoming is many days away, a funeral away for these people, and limited. The Red Cross is coordinating, meaning they are also going where the Cavalry ships and planes are not going. Amazingly, the logistics are well-coordinated. Probably good old UK and US process flow theory in action altogether. The area of destruction rivals 40% of the total area of the Kingdom of Thailand, and the Philippine population is more than double of the Thai population. Please consider it. It is equivalent to 30 of 77 provinces being annihilated here. Please. If this happened in your home country I would write a letter like this, if I knew the channels I recommended were not extortion artists. Just so you know, the American Red Cross runs the Philippine branches. They are audited by the IRS (called the Infernal Revenue Service), and have a tight rein on incoming funds. The Red Cross has 24% operating costs, but the food ration I stated was after the 'admin cost reduction'. In the Philippines, 760 baht buys a LOT of rice and medicine, enough to feed and care for four people for two weeks or more. The middle eastern countries didn't help their neighbours either. There are world wide organzations like red cross to help countries in need and during diaster times. All of these are western run. All that "stored" THAI Rice could be put to good use but that might need some joint action from both sides of Thai politics. The Chinese are showing an utterly mean spirit in the matter. For crying out loud, even the Japs are doing a lot better, although some of the older people in the Philippines probably think it is the Second Invasion, considering the current argument over territorial rights. Can only hope that the various authorities "on the ground" can get their act together and not just see this as a way to "skim" the aid that is being sent. You should know by now that Thai people hide behind this pretence smile and never think and be concerned about anything else except their own selves and their immediate families. Donations is only for the local Wat and that is because they believe that by offering the 100-200 baht all their sins and wrongdoings will be forgotten. Only in the case they are going to loose face to the international scene may be and I repeat may be they will do something to show themselves up. So let's wait and see what will happen! But as they are not then their navy ships should be on the way, their air force planes should be in the sky with fast response medical teams and food, particularly rice. Great that individuals can and are making donations but Thailand and other ASIAN countries have (had) the ability to be there quickly when other countries will take longer to arrive. To me that they are not there is a national disgrace. I know that in the past where I have made payments going from $ to Baht, their exchange rate was between 1 and 2 baht per dollar less than the TT rate. Short memories often go hand in hand with deep pockets. I used to live in Phang Nga in 2003 and we'd just moved to the northeast when the Tsunami hit that area on Christmas 2004. We're crying, when we saw the disaster on TV, even the ID card of a Thai friend they're looking for.. Germany for example had sent 10 million Euros first Aid, but almost nothing arrived at those poor guys who'd lost all and many relatives and friends. Including foreign tourists. We drove to Phang Nga immediately and there was no first aid to see. Only the dead bodies, pretty difficult to find out who it was, as some were in salt water for a longer period of time. Then you couldn't even say which ethnic race the dead body belonged to. Then the unbelievable.... The German BKA ( Bundeskriminalamt, similar to the FBI) had also sent forensic experts, who started their job immediately. Until some weird Thais accused them of working without a work permit. Thailand said that they'd have enough of those specialists and they'd to leave the country. I'm afraid that this catastrophe had killed many people and made a lot homeless. The photos and news clips most people see are in Tacloban which is actually a little bit "protected compared to Guiuan and Mac Arthur. Now, several days into this disaster we have heard nothing of survival of any family members. Those two towns do not really exist anymore. The US Navy carrier and another ship arrive tomorrow and things will happen. At the moment, 90% of the aid that has been sent is not being allowed into Tacloban airport as it is being used exclusively by the Philippine Air Force and their two C-130's. Complete chaos is the order of the day...New Peoples Army (communist) have attacked food convoys, people are hungry and will do anything. My wife and I will fly over early next week to sort out what we can with her family...if any survived. Word is that the Mac Arthur mayor had the high school as a shelter. It sits less than 50 meters from the open east facing sea and rumors have it that it collapsed completely as did many other "safe" shelters. Almost a week and no one has made it to Mac Arthur... Thank you all for your kindness. We are hoping that those helps/donations will not go to the pocket of greedy crocodiles in Philippine government. Like another pointed out and you have reaffirmed the infrastructure is not capable of dealing with the amount of help they need. Hopefully the Americans will have lots of helicopters. From what i have heard an aircraft carrier is capable of producing thousands of gallons of fresh water a day. It was sickening to read about the terrorist armies attacking food convoys. I hope the U S helicopters are armed and allowed to intervene when they see some thing like that happening.
