100,000 demonstrate to remove 312 MPs, senators

BANGKOK, Nov 20 – More than 100,000 people have officially endorsed the impeachment of 312 MPs and senators, former Democrat MP Ekkanat Prompan said today.

He said the latest count at 10 pm last night confirmed the figure, and the authenticity as well as documents of 40,000 names were already checked.

There will be more supporters from the provinces including 3,000 additional signatures from the southern province of Chumphon, he said.

He said former MP Suthep Thaugsuban, leading the Democracy Monument demonstration, is scheduled to submit the petition calling for impeachment at Parliament this afternoon.

Mr Ekkanat called on all factions to respect the Constitution Court’s ruling and stop threatening the judges.

He was referring to Red Shirt protesters at Rajamangala Stadium who announced that they may mobilise their supporters onto city streets if the court judgement is not in their favour.

The Constitution Court is scheduled to decide today if the ruling Pheu Thai Party breached the Constitution in passing a bill requiring all members of the Senate to be elected, and no longer having some appointed members as stipulated in the Constitution.

Mr Ekkanat said Samran Rat police arrested Komut Suetrong for creating a disturbance at the Democracy Monument rally site yesterday. (MCOT online news)

Somehow this does not strike me as sounding like a peaceful mobilization on the streets and certainly not what tourists will want to be greeted by in the fast approaching "high season". Just sounds like trouble.

Unless those tourists wander into the Rajamangala Stadium there's not much chance of them coming across red shirts as opposed to the three other groups of assorted "citizens" wandering around at will and blocking Bangkoks hallowed streets.

Military intervention is the worst possible outcome, although it would certainly reinvigorate the UDD with a cause, and prove Jatuporn and Co as being right all along.

If PTP are removed in a political scenario, or a universally agreed on compromise if found with relative peace Thailand's long term outlooks are much improved. Which is somehing all people who live here; (Thais and expats alike) should want.

H90 i 100% disagree with you- how many coups has Thailand have, what is the situation we are in now? Why would a coup again change anything, it would just start the vicious circle again and push more and more persons to TS. All the crap that is talked about Bangkok elites, military interference etc would just be further entrenched in the mind. Unless you are alluding that the military would take over and not hold elections and just run it themselves. I think it has been proven over and over again that they have no capacity/skill or real desire to do that, far more happy taking their cut from behind the shadows. Perhaps a coup would be an extremely short term solution, but it is just papering over the cracks, its about time the whole thing came to a head, after which hopefully cool heads will prevail.

The pro-government red shirts rallied outside the Democrat Party head office at noon Wednesday. They blew sports air horns outside the party in a protest.

BANGKOK, Nov 20 – Red Shirt supporters will expand their rally in Bangkok, originally scheduled to end tonight, if the Constitution Court’s ruling today fails to appease them.

Thida Thavornseth, chairwoman of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD), said the rally at Rajamangala Stadium is to monitor the court’s judgement on a charter amendment concerning electoral procedures and composition of the Senate.

A bill, calling for the election of all members of the Senate, with no appointed members as at present, was passed by Parliament, prompting the opposition Democrat Party to lodge a petition with the Constitution Court claiming that Parliament's action breaches Section 68 of the charter.

Mrs Thida said the Constitution review was approved by the national legislative body and the judicial branch should not intervene and block the action.

The three pillars of democracy – administrative, legislative and judicial branches – should not interfere with each other, said Mrs Thida.

She said Thailand will be in chaos if the Constitution Court dissolves the ruling Pheu Thai Party and revokes the political rights of 312 MPs and senators.

“We may mobilise the suporters (now at Rajamangala Stadium) instead of calling it off Wednesday night. Core leaders will hold a meeting if the court’s ruling is not in our favour. However, we will not pressure, threaten or assault the judges,” said Mrs Thida.

“The demonstrators will listen to only three core leaders - myself, Nattawut Saikua and Jatuporn Prompan. We assure that our fight will be peaceful.”

It wasn't the amnesty bill that was ruled unconstitutional. It was a bill to change the senate to all elected senators.

The amnesty bill is still in it's little box waiting for 170 (odd) more days for something to happen to it.
