BANGKOK: -- Mook, 17, never imagined she could have a different life, away from ricefields and farming. Having lost her mother at the age of 9, she moved to Surin, one of the poorest provinces in Thailand, to live with her father’s family.

She was then obliged to work in the fields, clean the house and look after her younger cousins.

At 12, a friend of the family saw her strong body and suggested she pursue a life of weightlifting. She got a scholarship for the National Youth Team in Bangkok and started a new life. Now she gets a small salary and has a safe place to stay while she pursues her studies in high school. [read more...]

Not much of a story, a decent education would have done the girl more good, but that's expecting a bit too much here.

You do what you can do... she has a short career at best. I hope she can get some sponsors to support her. Thai athletes are notoriously underpaid and for all nationalism that is spewed from the government sports propaganda channels, it's time they were paid their worth.

She is getting opportunities and a degree of fame and respect that she would otherwise not have got. I for one am pleased for her, and hope her good fortune continues.

Nice to hear a good story- Good luck to her, she has come along way already, by the sounds of things she needed a change of luck and it appears it may have come.

It makes a change from all the political stories we are getting at the moment.

If you read the whole story you would have read she is still studying. If she had not been a weightlifter then she would probably be working in the fields in Surin.

Good luck to the girl I hope she achieves her goals clap2.gif

To quote a movie... "Show me the money!"

Many stories about young Thai women usually involve some sort of tragedy. Although her situation might not be perfect, she has learned that there is another world outside of subsistence farming. Hopefully this will be a first step to her becoming more self sufficient. The one lesson she has learned that is not taught in Thai schools is that she has a chance to improve with self determination and personal effort. I wish her the best.

Thai girl takes up sport, hardly a story, coconuts must be getting desperate

Not only that, not happy with his first barb and jab, he has posted a 2nd.

sms if you cannot say anything positive just keep your negativity to yourself. We don't need it.

Its a good story. Nothing wrong with it. Nothing wrong with her and its good to see girls getting support in such a male-centric society.
