No, it's perfectly legal to buy/sell these. Well if you have a work permit. However, if you are in a public place with some and playing cards you can be arrested if they think they represent cash.

Separately, playing cards and chips are fine.

Re the chips - I have a set and take them to various mates' places for a regular game of Texas Hold 'em. Always worried that if I get stopped at a checkpoint the BIB will nick my set plus squeeze me for a bribe. Hasn't happened yet.

What sort of set do you have OP, and how much do you want for them - I might consider buying a spare set.

Poker chips are NOT illegal. 7/11 sell playing cards and sometimes roulette wheels. I saw poker chips for sale in Central Khon Kaen. I have been arrested for having poker chips in a bar but wasn't charged.

Online gambling is NOT illegal unless the site is registered in Thailand.

Gambling is illegal, not wearing a helmet is illegal, prostitution is illegal but they happen ALL the time.

People seem to blow the gambling is illegal thing out of proportion. IN my soi, there are two gambling shops totally open for all to see, pictures of fottballers on the walls. My old neighbour is a full-time croupier.

Travel guides, websites seem to stress "don't gamble in Thailand!" Funny how they don't say "don't ride a motorcycle with no helmet on" or "never engage in prostitution in Thailand".

There are three forms of gambling that are legal in Thailand. The two that you mentioned, and betting on Muay Thai fights.

Government sanctioned gambling , lottery & horses is legal. Any other form is illegal, very simple.

McDonalds and BK sell chips no problem.

What are the laws against gambling? I see every where people selling lottery tickets, I go into bars and they have horse racing forms right there in the open. So to say gambling is illegal in Thailand is not 100% correct. I even remember a few years ago there was talk that Thailand's government was visiting Las Vegas looking into opening Vegas Style casinos to boost tourism and revenue.

What are the fines and penalties for gambling, and what are the fines and penalties for book making and running a gambling house? Is it a slap on the wrist like in so many areas here in the US or is it the type of crime that they throw you in jail for longer then 10 years?

With all the online gambling sites it isn't hard to place a bet on anything. I live in Las Vegas where you can bet on just about anything anytime and people still use bookies and play poker in private games, bookies are illegal but the private games are not as long as no rake is taken. The Bookies use online sites to book the bets but they are not really online sites since you play on credit and are paid or pay in person, the sites just took the place of phone operators.

BTW FSU opened a -7.5 they are going to win by 20+ so that is the bet

The fines vary. I know people who have been fined 300 baht. Normally, one should expect a 1-2,000 baht fine if going to court. I've heard some foreigners say that they could get kicked out the country but I doubt that very much.

I know one woman who was fined 2 million baht as she was operating a large football betting book. This is more serious as it is taking away business from the BIB.
