Political strife badly affects Thai chance in UNSC: FM

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Foreign Minister Surapong Tohvichakchaikul said Thursday he briefed the nine Asean envoys about the current political situations.

Surapong said he was worried that some countries may not understand the protesters’ actitivities, so he hosted the briefing for the diplomats from Asean grouping. Thailand is a member of the 10-member Asean.

He said after the meeting that the foreign diplomats understood the situation. "The current political stalemate has affected the country's chance of being nominated as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council because the international confidence towards Thailand has been adversely affected.

The protesters have protested against the government and Thaksin Regime for weeks. Their mass rallies resulted in Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s decision to dissolve the House of Representatives.

The protesters are now campaigning against the government under the name of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee which has rally leader Suthep Thaugsuban, a former Democrat MP, as secretary general.

The comittee claimed Yingluck government as illegitimate and attempt to form an interim government to run the country.

You can't fix the problems and get rid of the crap in your own country but you're worried about not being able to become a security council member. Boggles the mind the priorities of this government! facepalm.gif

I'm sure Hun Sen understand his eternal brother's problems only too well. His people are becoming restive too.

As for the UNSC, why would other nations want Thailand on the Security Council when they can't even keep control at home?

Just too few people wearing too many hats in this family oriented government. This in addition to their displayed incompentance at handling what they were orginally tasked with.

"ack of many, master of non" does seem to be a fitting discription .

What is the real benefit of any country to be a non-permanent member of UNSC? My country tried to get in, but in reality what is the benefit? Few politicians get a highlight of their career?

Actually - - - I don't really feel that Thailand has a "real" government. It's more like a ????? club or game or competition with the winning "team" getting all the spoils of the tax revenues etc. Not really for or by the Thai people eh????

I think all the knowledgeable world factions realize what Thailand really is about. For starters - no rule of law.

Actually the political strife has been going on in Thailand for over 80 years ever since it became a so called democracy, just read up on the political history of Thailand to see for yourself it will make your head spin! So it is actually nothing new it just maybe coming to a head now.

The image of the Thai whatever color protesters breaking through the glass doors, storing the hotel lobby, and aborting the meeting of ASEAN leaders is still fresh in everyone's mind along with the airport closing.
