Iraqi overstayer nabbed

SA KAEW: Police in Sa Kaew province yesterday arrested an Iraqi national married to a Thai on a charge of overstaying his visa.

Rahman Abbas Abedalt, 30, was arrested in front of a restaurant owned by his wife. He was charged with violating immigration law.

Rahman has overstayed his visa by 18 months, police said.

Police had been watching him following an order from National Police headquarters that all local forces keep an eye on Middle Easterners in their respective districts because they may be linked to foreign terrorist networks.

Such profiling is common in the work of the Thai police, who often admit to going after people of a particular race even though they have no grounds to do so.

National Intelligence Agency director Chumpon Manmai confirmed that Rahman was not on the watch list of suspected terrorists.
