Affidavit of Residence on tourist visa for drivers license...

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

So here's the scoop.

I have lived in Beijing and Shanghai for the past 7-8 years. I need to apply for a driver's license but the process of getting one from scratch ( meaning I no longer have a valid U.S one ) in China is quite troublesome, my schedule/work life just doesn't allow for such tom foolery.

I've been doing a bit of research online and it seems that acquiring a driver's license in Bangkok is the easiest option for somebody who has no valid license at all. I can drive plenty fine... just need a proper license.

My main questions are:

1. Is it possible to get a driver's license on a standard tourist visa?

2. Is it possible to get an Affidavit of Residence from the U.S embassy on a standard tourist visa?

3. If so, do I absolutely need a rental contract from a landlord to get the Affidavit of Residence from the U.S Embassy? Is there any way around this part.. or is there an " agent " that can help me supply one?

4. If you have a look at the attached affidavit supplied by the U.S Embassy, there is also a line about Employer. Do I need to be employed by a Thai based company to receive this Affidavit?

5. If I do end up having all my paperwork and passing the test, is the license that they issue the official laminated plastic one with my picture or is it a temporary paper one and they mail me the final version?

Any help/answers is greatly appreciated,

K

When I went to the immigration office with a 30 day visa exempt stamp, they didn't ask for any document to make the certificate. It was Chonburi immigration in Pattaya, Jomtien soi 5.

If I got a residence certificate from Jomtien immigration could I use it to obtain a licence in Chiang Mai, for example.

I wouldn't take the risk.

just book a pattaya hotel for a couple of days, get your residence certificate, go pass the driving licence exams in the Pattaya office (they are used to foreigners), done.

If i went to Pattaya, I can easily get this residence certificate in a day or so? From what I've read, it takes awhile to receive the residence certificate if I go thru immigrations... U.S embassy, pay 50 bucks, get notarized certificate on the spot. I'm only planning on staying in Thailand for a week.

Manarak,

I appreciate the advice. But I still need the following questions answered =)

1 - yes

2, 3, 4 ... US embassy stuff - unnecessary in my opinion

5 - you get the official laminated license directly, the first one will be a one year temporary license.

note: you will need a proper one year visa to get a 5 year license

1. Yes it is possible, but most immigration offices will require that you be here on and extension of stay not just a tourist visa (work, marriage, retirement, ED, etc.). It depends on the regulations in place at the office that you use. Officially the certificate is free but some offices do charge, mine 500 baht.

2. You can get an Affidavit of Residence from the US Embassy for a driver's license. It is a sworn notarized statement and costs $50. An appointment is required to gain access to ACS where the certificate is issued.

3. No

4. Just write in "self"

5. The first license will be a temporary license good for 1 year. It will have your picture on it and your address on the back. It will be laminated and will be issued on the same day that you pass the test. Since you have no license you will have to watch a 1 hour video, most likely take a written examination and do some driver test. My driving test years ago amounted to stopping on an incline and moving forward without drifting back. Separate driving licenses are required for cars and motor cycles. After the 1 year license has expired, you can apply for a 5 year license.

A 1 year temporary dl is not accepted for driving in other countries. Only a 5 years dl which you can not get tell after your 1 year has expired. The 1 year dl is a plastic smart card and across the top it says TEMPORARY.

This past week I have seen 2 LTD offices make the applicant with a proper dl and idp from the USA take the written and driving test. They were told that this would become law threw out Thailand after January 1.wink.png

Do you actually need a Thai licence? CM immigration refused me a residence cert on a tourist visa, daspite giving me one last year.

Research indicated a foreign licence with a picture or an International Driving Permit was acceptable.
