They said I had to have one before they would let me fly. Never has happened with any other airline.

If you don't have a visa you need a ticket out of the country within 30 days of arrival.

Within Asia it is not often asked, but it is the rule as stated by Ubonjoe.

Even in Asia you always run a risk. Airlines overbook their planes because there are always some people who don't show up. If more people show up than expected, they have to deny some people boarding. Guess who they deny first" the people whoms paperwork is not in order. They don't have to pay compeesation to them for missing the flight.

Happened often in the past.

To me in 2008 (return flight after 32 days , no visa), Had to rebook!!!

Some airlines are very fussy about that.

From kangaroo land, i was ok as i had reentry visa, retirement.
