Dr. Somkid has ordered relevant units to stimulate figures on investment and tourism industry

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Somkid Jatusripitak (สมคิด จาตุศรีพิทักษ์) has ordered relevant units to stimulate figures on investment and tourism industry.

Speaking after discussing with representatives from tourism, investment, and export sectors, Dr. Somkid said that he has urged units to work hard. This year, tourism is expected to grow by 20 percent. However, he will discuss this matter with Mr. Pracha Maleenont (ประชา มาลีนนท์), the Tourism and Sports Minister, next week.

Besides, the government must speed up in stimulating the national economy by contributing to the domestic investment.

Apart from the tourism industry, he will chair a meeting with the Board of Investment (BOI) next week, aiming to seek guidelines for this year and next year.

He admitted that the figures of the first quarter in this year are lower than the last year, and he considers that the economic growth in the second and third quarters will be affected from the strengthening of baht currency and the soaring of oil prices.

The Deputy Governor for Overseas Markets of the TAT, Mr. Pornsiri Manoharn (พรศิริ มโนหาญ), said that TAT will open new market by changing low season to be “green season”.

Shades of the Green Isaan campaign. It would be really hard to make this stuff up. I mean it is just a Thai Bureaucratic classic, where reality is far more bizarre than any fiction.

According to Khun Somkid, this year tourism is expected to grow by 20% while at the same time, it is down from last year and the tourism sector is battling a strengthening baat, soaring oil prices, not to mention worldwide inflation. You know, I was really struggling with this line of logic at first.

But a magicical bullet is provided by a Khun Pornsiri that accomdates the incongruity, declaring the low season to be forever now known as the "green" season. The Thais, being the animists that they are (only you more naive ex-pats believe them to be Buddhists) understand that by changing the name the reality will also be changed. And that new reality will cause the sudden change in fortunes and generate the 20% increase in tourism. It just makes such perfect sense now.

Chaiyo!

And all on the advice of fortune tellers don't you know.

I'm sure you too are aquainted with Thais who have changed their names, their companies names, their pet's names, their cars, you name it, with similarly high hopes.

Gotta love 'em. :D

I suppose that the entertainment venues will still be "morally corrected" by being closed earlier & earlier each year but that has no affect upon tourism, does it.

OOps!! Silly me! The introduction of the "Green Season" will more than counteract for this very necessary "moral correction" of entertainment venues.
