Colabamumbai
Take the Vans from the bus station 1 hour no police stops. Also their are vans available beside the big name variety store just after you exit customs on the left side in Nong Khai. Regular bus can take 1.5 hours if stopping for people. Colabamumbai
You could exit Thailand in Nong Khai, pay the overstay, they have a window for it, pay for a Lao visa, turn around and come back, but I do not know your long term plans. I used to always carry a copy of the front page of my passport, for showing if necessary, saves them asking to see complete passport. Saturday I got a ride into Udon from Nong Khai and then the van to Khon Kaen 100 Baht 1.5 hours. Good luck now.
