Rolling blackouts between three and nine hours long hit some locations in the capital, Kandal and Kampong Speu yesterday and will continue through Sunday, according to Electricite du Cambodge.

An EdC announcement dated Monday and obtained yesterday says the blackouts are necessary for maintenance.

“For repairing, maintaining, and replacing the electric supply facilities, EdC will disconnect the supply,” the announcement reads.

Today, the operation will see blackouts in some areas of Por Sen Chey, Sen Sok, Daun Penh and Prampi Makara districts.

On Saturday, parts of Russei Keo and Por Sen Chey will be affected.

Most of the blackouts will last three to five hours, but parts of Niroth commune in Meanchey district will be affected between 8am and 3pm daily.

An officer at EdC’s Electricity Supply Department, who was not authorised to speak to the media, said that some supply facilities in those areas were not working correctly and needed replacement.
