I live in Bangna and have recently been driving down to Pattaya for the weekend as It's the most convenient for me traffic wise.

Is there any decent hidden gems to stay at about half the distance? be it mountains or beaches?

There is the Khao Keaow Zoo which is huge, lovely and has, I believe accomodation. They do night safari's and lots of other stuff so might be nice for a weekend. And it is almost exactly half way.

Seconded, The Islands name is Koh Sichang.

I found this little gem from a website put up by an American Expat (David) and his Thai wife (Pan)

They have a restaurant with some great food but Pan's homemade ice cream is to die for.

Tham Phang beach is a must, great food, clear water and no vendors to piss you off.

The best time to visit is midweek, as the beach is very quiet then.
