And it's not by The Beatles After last year's contentious poll of their top 500 albums of all time, 82 critics, past and present, from Britain's New Musical Express (NME) magazine have voted on the best song of all time, resulting in another fascinating list that's sure to annoy as many, if not more, people than it impresses. King of the hill is Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit, which also topped Triple J's 2009 poll for the Hottest 100 of all time. The only other song the two surveys have in common in their top 10s is Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart, which is No. 2 for NME and was No. 4 for Triple J listeners. The full 500 can be found in this week's issue of NME. Meanwhile the top 25 are: 1. Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana 2. Love Will Tear Us Apart – Joy Division 3. I Feel Love – Donna Summer 4. xen Posted February 8, 2014 Share Posted February 8, 2014 it appears to be slanted towards 80s & 90's Brit Pop but that is NME readership is wanting . Personally i would not have put any of them in the top 25 but many will not agree and so for every individual there would be a different top 25 or top 500. Also does best mean the most musically perfect in every sense of the word or just a damm good song. For example I Feel Love is the third best song of all time (?) and Eleanor Rigby would struggle to get into most people's favourite top ten Beatles songs. Lists like these are only good for one thing: casually browse through them, perhaps listen to something you don't know, or something long "forgotten". They might serve the purpose of discovering "new" music, although I personally find other tools/methods/sources much better. The best songs ever are the ones YOU like best, not what other people prefer.
