The Marine Department is accelerating the rehabilitation plan for better pier facilities at Phi Phi Islands. A new modern pier will be built to replace the existing tsunami damaged one at a budget of 80 million baht, and reported to be complete in one and a half years. It is expected to be able to accommodate eight cruise ships or boats at one time. The Director-General of the Marine Department, Thawalyarat Onsiri, said that the pier used by cruise ships at present had become dilapidated. The Marine Department put up wooden piles about 2 meters from the structure, to prevent direct impacts from the cruise ships as a short-term measure. He emphasized that the plan to improve pier facilities at Phi Phi Islands was a high priority. The original plan, to accommodate 16 cruise ships at one time, was rejected by the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning. It was then modified as suggested and the Environmental Impact Assessment plan will be submitted to Environmental Board within the next two weeks. He was confident that the plan will be approved and that construction would start as soon as possible. At present, the number of Thai and foreign tourists visiting Phi Phi Islands stands at 1.4 million a year, on average.

As we all know Phi Phi is a natural park :D So 16 ships is to much but 8 accepteble, i remember the first time i visited Phi Phi when there was only a small wooden pier in 1989, the electricity in most of the bamboo huts turned of ofter 17.00 hours. There were no stone buildings, and it was a beautifull little spot, i returned with my wife allmost every year, and saw what happened to the place.

Sometimes there was a big ship in the "harbour" and when those guest came to the shore the vendors were making good money.

The widest street on Phi Phi is 2.5 meter, 8 cruise ships?

I guess you can kiss Phi Phi goodbuy, after the tsunami, i think the big boys will devide the island among each other, cause most land is owned by coconutfarmers and there family, and probably dont have papers proving the land is their's, good luck to the big boys, Dusit island ? Hilton ? respect nature ?

Same old story..........boring :D
