air quality in high rise buildings

There is often debate/comment on TV about air quality generally, and more particularly, for those with respiratory problems, and also about preferences for condo living or moobaan etc living.

Just came across a report in The European Journal of Epidemiology from extensive Research by The University of Bern,Switzerland into 1.5 million people living in buildings of 4 floors or more. They analysed 142000 deaths over 8 years. Seems robust.

They say: People living 8th floor or above are 40% less likely to die from lung cancer and 35% less likely to die from severe heart disease

(on the other hand people on the ground floor are less likely to jump to their death apparently - great research finding-doh!)

But, in Spain they have found that hay fever sufferers are worse off on a higher floor than living in the country as pollen rises as the air warms in the morning and falls in the evening as it cools-so it gets you twice.

As ever, at least 2 sides to the coin but it does seem that if you choose city life, hay fever apart, you are better off from air and noise pollution at least 8 floors up.

And you get a cooler breeze which is a consideration in this low breeze city.

The debate begins...... Maybe some TV experts have better research, but certainly will express different opinions. Of course Bern and Chiang Mai are fairly different!
