Thighlander
It's my first time back since the new beer taxes went into effect. It seems to have had a big impact on single can prices for Chang and Leo. What about the cases of big bottles? What are the best deals? Thanks! MESmith
Probably Makro. Same price in BigC, but not much choice or stock. eg Chang Draught, Light 539 bt per case, large bottles.
lmfao
I buy water an occasionally box of beer from the local wholesale shops? There are a few around me, wholesale prices cant beat it.
taotoo
Yeah the local places tend to be a bit cheaper than Makro etc.

Popular Post SantiSuk
I buy cases in bulk regularly for our Hash House Harriers. The difference in prices between the supermarkets (including Makro) and independent beer box shops is negligible (few baht at most). Not worth spending fuel looking around IMO! Best selections of beer in boxes are at beer box shops (good ones), Makro, Big C and Tesco in that order, but a big urban Tesco will often beat a small local Makro. Big bottles easy to source. Small bottles can be a problem. The last duty rise levelled the playing field between beer prices - ie Leo got a 17% price rise to bring it close to the traditionally higher price of Singha (only 8% up). I suspect that is the unwinding of Boon Rawd's strategy of two tier pricing following the success of Leo (Thai Beverages' Chang Beer has been seen-off in the market). No real bargains around and you should buy to your own taste anyway. Archa still appreciably cheaper if you just want a beer but is probably not freely available in boxes outside Isaan. I buy it for village parties but I would never offer it to real drinkers (hashers ). Chang Draught and Chang Export do save you a bit of money and I will buy those. Chang regular is brain damage IMO - might as well drink Lao Khao. Rarely see special offers in beer. If you find something (possible mispricings in Mom&Pop places!) go for it, but bear in mind you should not keep beer too long. I always buy where I know there is high stock turnover and would want to have it consumed within a couple of months ideally. Can't believe I'm discussing crappy lager as though it's real beer ( CAMRA member - have nothing against good lagered, usually German, beer though ). When will Thailand relent on protective brewing policies that prevent small independent domestic brewers? Being allowed to sell Singha and Chang globally, but shutting out imports with high tariffs - shame on you Thailand!!
isanbirder
What is a box of large tiger or heineken going for? I've bought cases of large Tiger twice since the price increase, for 622 and 615 (this was in Makro Buriram, but CM is probably similar).. I don't know why Khwaibah is paying 702 for large Leo; the small shops sell it for 55 a bottle here, i.e. 660 a case..... and that's retail. Thighlander
Some of the Tescos are guilty of selling stuff a year old; must be their British culture. 620 for Tiger......S-O-L-D! Chang Export is undrinkable. IMO. Last year. I went to the Thai Beer store by the Old City Thai Airways office. His prices were good, but some was very fresh; while others were very old. You just can't let your guard down...I pay attention at the pharmacies, too.
isanbirder
One of the advantages of buying Tiger at Makro is that they sell out very quickly, so what you get is always fresh. Unless of course you're unlucky and they've already sold out!
Thighlander
I'm on foot, so I went to Tesco on the North side of the moat. Tigers were 56 thb, with a born on date of 21 January 2014. Looks like I'm done with Leo, if it is only a few thb less. That Tesco seems to be better than the one on the east side, and the one on the south side. Sheers! naboo
Chang Draught/Classic - 535-540B a case of 12 big bottles. Leo/Chang Export - 565-570B a case of 12 big bottles. Anyone paying more needs to learn the Thai for 'case' ('lang'). Don't forget to factor in the savings by taking your empty case to the local recycling dump, you can generally get 12B a case back. I usually wait until I have 40 cases of empties so I can start my new collection with a free case. Usually get a free case every month. Rotweiler
Interesting discussion. Especially about the Cheers and Cheers HD. As usual, someone urinating all over Cheers. Fascinating. Especially considering that Cheers has EARNED more awards than any other Thai beer. Earned being the operative word if you should look at the Boon Rawd list of "Achievements and Awards" - including the Gold Medal from the Thai-Asian Association of Beer Distributors; the ASEAN Association of etc, etc.
Thighlander
I did it once on a 3 for 99 thb promotion. It makes a good case for over the counter pharmaceuticals.

The crafty buggers dropped the contents of the bottles from 640cl to 630cl and also downed the alcoholic content as well. Rip off on rip off...nowt ever changes in Amazing Thailand ! Thighlander
Bought Tigers today. Born on 4 February 2014....factoring in the 640 ml bottle vs. the 630 Leo bottle; they are only 2% more expensive. No excuse for bars to be serving beers grom 2013.
