Police teams tracking top rally leaders

BANGKOK: -- Police have assigned a four-man team to follow key leaders of the anti-government protest around the clock to provide updates on their whereabouts - so the team can be assembled in short notice to arrest them when a chance appears, a high-ranking police source has revealed.

The teams travel in two vehicles and two motorcycles and will contact arresting teams to detain the leaders when the right time comes.

The steps include an initial approach, giving them notice of the warrant and looming arrest. The leaders will be extracted from where they are apprehended, the source added.

Chief protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban has been followed exclusively by a special team led by a high-ranking officer, as Suthep has been guarded by a 40-strong protection team.

The anti-protest operation at the Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO) has obtained arrest warrants for 19 leaders of the People's Democratic Reform Committee, including Sonthiyarn Chuenruethainaitham. He was apprehended on Monday and is now in police custody in a facility outside Bangkok.

The Criminal Court is considering whether to approve warrants for another 13 leaders, while police are going through court steps to seek warrants for 26 others.

The arrest of Sonthiyarn has signalled the possibility of a police plan to reclaim areas occupied by the protesters, with the rally at the Government Complex on Chaeng Wattana Road north of Bangkok the most likely target, as it has been protected by the fewest protesters among all venues.

Police have been seen practising the use of net guns, at the Royal Thai Police Sports Club where the CMPO is located, amid reports of purchasing more than 500 sets of net guns and a large number of rubber bullets used in crowd-control operations.

In an original plan to snatch and arrest leaders from crowds of protesters, the CMPO had five special weapons and tactics (SWAT) teams at five bases to enact that plan, under direct order of national police chief Pol General Adul Saengsingkaew.

But this plan was put on hold for fear of resistance and sparking violence from both sides.

Assistant police chief Pol Lt-General Winai Thongsong runs the tracking of leaders and has been given top detectives from various police divisions and units he has been close with to carry out the tracking.

Winai said the techniques to be used would be similar to those applied successfully in arresting Sonthiyarn.

"The tracking team had been following him for several days, to make sure he was not armed, and protected by bodyguards.

"We waited until he finished his meal, before we approached him, talked and produced the warrant and apprehended him, all in a non-violent manner," he said.

Dangerous work for the police. If they get caught they risk torture by the mad monk.

I can't wait till they search Suthip's house and find the deeds to the land he has been buying with all the money that the sheeple have been giving him.

The BIBs spend most of their careers sitting on their <deleted> and thinking of ways to get bribes and doing little to fight crime. Hell, we're lucky if we find a policeman who isn't a criminal himself. It's nice they have to actually earn their salary for a change.

why not an arresting of a 40 strong armed militia protecting this fascist.

We really need to know how an armed gang can keep this guy in central bangkok when he is down to his last 100 protesters.

Is it army protecting him on behalf of elites?

is it private militia protecting him on behalf of army and therefore elites?

Nobody seems to be worrying that this armed force is operating openly and preventing the Police from doing their job. A job they are doing quite well away from the actual stage areas. I do notice lots of arrests and warrants of straying sheep.

Police who FEAR resistence in making an arrest are not police. Thai police would be more useful as rice laborers or sidewalk sweepers. One thing no one can ever accuse Thailand police now of being is applying excess use of force. But isn't it odd that when the Democrats were in power, the police never hesitated to use force on public demonstators? There is something fundamentally wrong with the Thai police force that it will not uphold the law; yes, the law created under the Democrat regime and not a device created by the PTP.

You know the reasons why hes still out there pip ;)

Until he gets the nod to go home or it gets too untenable he will be out there.

locals know whats what and whos backing who, you only have to pop down to the local market and listen, they are bang on the money but it cant be discussed here.

Considering whats stacked against them and how their hands have been tied for months now the BIB are doing pretty well, especially since the border police got involved :)

Now this is going just too far, A plug for your wannabe squeeze (yingluck) is one thing but to give the RTP credit for a 'well done job' is approaching, what some may consider 'arse kissing'.

Its not the protection 'this guy' has, its the incompentance of those in charge, those thowing out threats, baisless accusations, and the organization of cream puffs who operate under the disguise of RTP.

Seems like a quick road block would stop the convoy of Suthep. Do you really think Suthep guards would open fire on police? Suthep would be personally responsible since these are his personal guards.

Won't work, this. Remember Chalerm said he will 'disguise himself, go in and arrest Suthep', or something to that effect? Yeah... that would work. That was a brilliant plan! Still is.

Fascist = NO

100 protestors left = You must be blind. Clearly deluded.

Elites = WHO ?

Private militia = You mean like the red shirts and black shirts who work for Taksin ? Why can he have it but Suteb can't ?

Armed force = They have fired in self defence only and 99% or so are not armed at all.

Police doing their job = cheesy.gif

Kindly go and spread your propaganda and hyperbole elsewhere sheeple stooge...

"Winai said the techniques to be used would be similar to those applied successfully in arresting Sonthiyarn."

What techniques? Follow a man to a restaurant and arrest him after his meal? (Also wonder if the BIB stood around the table while waiting, or actually sat down and ordered their own meal while they were at it). Did they not stop to think, even for a moment, that Sonthiyam was 'asked to go astray' a little? I mean, what are the chances of a wanted protest leader leaving the fray and having a meal on his own? I also seem to remember another report that said Sonthiyam was one of the brains in the anti-government protests, that he planned this and managed that. If he was really that competent, would it not be possible that his dining alone, in an open public area, while being high-up on a wanted list, is a part of a strategic plan? Just saying yer know...

As for the BIBs patting themselves on the backs for this 'arrest'... ok, if that makes you guys happy, so be it :-)
