From The Phuket News FB feed:

Looks like some blockade action in Patong last night. Apparently a few parking tickets were issued to Tuk Tuks around 8.30pm and a Patong-wide blockade ensued. Police openly admitted they couldn't do much about it. Tourists were stranded dragging their bags across the town as transport was impossible. Carried on until 5am this morning.

They are obstructing/ blocking traffic flow, police should bring in tow trucks and impound the Tuk tuks

Charge them a heavy fine for the return of vehicles, The police could do something about it if they

really wanted to

I don't think they have the manpower to do that.

Patong residents are from various parts of Thailand. Basically people who are just visiting the location, not feeling that they are part of the local community. Therefore I think it's unlikely that the police would get large support from the local community for a big cleaning day.

I'm not so sure they are ready to put their well beings on the line to act against the mafia.

The fight against tuk-tuk pack will take time. I think the only people who are willing to put their asses on the line are the people who are protecting their homes and the future of their families.

Many Thai people in Patong are just visiting (working for few years etc) the place. The same way as we foreigners are just visitors here. If there is too many problems, we can opt to move out. Therefore there is very few people who really cares of Patong and the soi dogs can roam free.

Are there any twitter photos? I am surprised this did not make the international news. When the French air traffic controllers go on strike, the BBC always report that.

I don't know of any sector in Phuket that likes these extortionists. The police tolerate them due to their "working relationship", but beyond this, no one would shed any tears if they all went away and were replaced by law abiding drivers using metered taxis a la Bangkok. The whole island would say good riddance.

I agree.

But to break the current mafia dominance requires collective support from the people who are brave enough to stand against the mafia (and brave enough to face possible attracts from the mafia) .

People who are just visitors, will not create the momentum, as they can always move out if things get too ugly. People who feel the place is their home with roots inside the ground, are far more willing to fight to protect their own area.

It's basically the same psychology as why rental home areas are not so well kept as the areas where people own the homes they live in.
