Thoughts about island skipping from Koh Lanta to Langkawi - March

Featured Replies

We're doing a tour of the islands in S. Thailand in a few weeks. Hoping to leave my car in Koh Lanta, and then island skip all the way to Langkwai. Take the bus and/or train back to get the car, and then drive back to Pattaya....with a few stops along the way!

I've been looking at this website:

Pretty good info on the islands. Has anybody done this before? Of have any suggestions? Maybe we should head down towards Trang and leave the car there? Too many options!

the link below is the speed boat that goes all along the coast from lanta ,i believe you can get off at any of the islands you want, your plan sounds good you can get minibus back up ,might be a little messing around getting back on to ko lanta, might be a bit easier if you left car in krabi ,but then you have to make your way to ko lanta by minibus which is easy enough.

any way here is the boat link looks like a great trip and them islands are some of the best i my opinion crystal clear turquoise water with fish at your feet.

Thanks! That's one of my debates. Where to leave the car. Another option is to drive to Koh Lanta, enjoy it for a few days, then down to/or nearby Pak Meng and leave the car there for 5 days or so while exploring the islands off the coast. I've also heard the beaches along there are quite nice. Then drive down to Pak Bara, leave the car and head out to Tarutao and the other islands.

I like this idea as again, I've heard the coast is quite nice. Do you have any experience with that coast?

Thanks!!

Wow...that website has some great info! I'll pin it here in the travel forum. Looks like the Hat Yao pier might be a great place to leave the car. Thanks!!

drive to Lanta, spend a few days

then south to Trang and head off to the islands

or

south to Satun and head off to langkawi by ferry

Any thoughts on what islands are best to visit? Tarutao, Lipe and Langkawi are for sure. Kradan and Libong seem really good also.

I've been to Koh Lanta a few times. So might skip it this time in order to see the others.

Seconded! Never knew that one. Great Langkawi fan so will make a great alternative to my normal Had Yai-Satun route smile.png

although the boat trip down the coast looks great i think its more for the tourists,if you have your own car and use the boat you have the added hassle of using public land transport to get back to wherever you left your car.

so i think yes you would be better driving down to trang and explore the islands from there, once your on the island you can just jump from one to the other by boat whenever you fel like it.

the drive from krabi to trang is nice and easy only 160km.

was at had yao pier trang about 5 weeks ago looks alright to leave the car their and libong island is right opposite the pier ,I've only been kradan and mom/muk both nice islands but no doubt all the islands down their look great ,seen some great pictures of lipe but itlipe gets very busy in high season now,i would tend to check out some of the smaller lesser known islands.

there is a nice road thats runs down the coast line along the beach from pak meng to had yao, make sure you check out yoo ling beach just before had yao its national park you have to pay to get in,its the fist time i ever got thai price 20 bht for showing thai driver license ,they have some good thai food in there great place to stop and relax for a few hours.

if you go on the trip report back here and let us know how it went.

You can park you car at my place in Phuket Town. Undercover parking, for 150 THB per day.
